The Newport school community has been shaping young minds for generations. Beginning with Newport Consolidated School around 1926, local students attended school together from the elementary years all the way through high school 🌱 For decades, it served as an important gathering place and cornerstone of the Newport community.
As Carteret County grew and schools evolved, a new chapter began. When West Carteret High School opened in 1963, Newport’s high school students transitioned there, bringing the era of the consolidated school to a close. Over time, elementary and middle grades evolved into the separate Newport schools we know and love today—continuing a long tradition of learning, connection, and community 💙

Welcome to Atlantic, North Carolina — a proud coastal community where tradition, family, and school spirit run deep! ❤️⚓ Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Atlantic Elementary School, a small school with BIG pride! 🌟
Atlantic’s rich educational history dates back more than 120 years. 📚 In 1905, community leaders helped open the Atlantic Graded School, which became the first county graded school and high school in Carteret County. By 1906, students from communities across Down East Carteret County traveled to Atlantic for educational opportunities, and many even boarded with local families to attend school. ✨
In 1950, a new Atlantic School building opened, serving students from Atlantic, Cedar Island, Sea Level, and Stacy. The school remained the heart of the community for generations, with the last graduating class of Atlantic High School graduating in 1965. 🏫💙
Today, Atlantic Elementary continues that proud tradition as a close-knit community school where generations of families have walked the halls and where students are known, loved, and supported. 🫶
