STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION

Listed below are some things good readers do before, during, and after reading. Please discuss these with your child and encourage him/her to do them on a regular basis.

BEFORE I READ:

I look at the title and the illustrations.

I browse through the test.

I think about what I already know about the topic.

I make predictions about what will happen.

WHEN I READ:

I try to picture what is happening.

I think about what might come next.

I think about the feelings of the characters.

I stop and think about what I've read.

I use fix-up strategies when I need to.

I reread when I don't understand something.

AFTER I READ:

I look back over the story.

I write something or talk to someone about what I've read.

I summarize what I've read.

I think about related things I've read.
