Absence from School Due to a Valid Educational Opportunity In the event parents would request an excused absence in order to take advantage of a “valid educational opportunity,” White Oak Elementary School defines valid educational opportunities for a child as 1) travel solely for the purpose of the educational opportunity; 2) events/activities that are educational in nature and not ordinarily available to students; and 3) events and activities which are extensions of the classroom and respective grade level curriculum.
BEFORE THE ABSENCE WILL BE CONSIDERED In order for your child to be approved for a valid educational absence, the following must be submitted to the principal five school days prior to the planned absence. 1) A completed Educational Opportunity Request Form; 2) An itinerary/detailed schedule of sites to be seen and activities to be experienced; and 3) A brief summary of how these events extend the grade level curriculum experience for the student. This information will be reviewed and the parent will be notified should additional information be needed or should the request be denied.
DURING THE ABSENCE The student must: · Keep a detailed daily journal of activities; · Collect pictures, pamphlets, ticket stubs, brochures, etc. from places visited.
UPON RETURN TO SCHOOL The student must: · Complete all missed assignments; · Share collected information with the class; and · Turn in the travel journal to the principal. Should any of the above criteria not be met, the student’s absences will be coded as unexcused. A student may be excused for no more than five days per school year due to a valid educational opportunity.
