PAC BOARD MEETING

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

 

Call meeting to order.     8:56 am

 

Accept Minutes.     April Minutes Accepted

 

Members in attendance:  Lynn Daly, Kim Jones, Marsha Atwood, Martha Swiber, Khristy Benson, Mrs. Everett, Mrs. Patterson, and Lisa Guarino

           

 

I.   WOES PAC Projects 

          Newsletter - Marsha Atwood   

Final Newsletter will be sent out for approval before the end of school

          Meet & Greet  – Khristy Benson – recap

·        Well done and parents very receptive. Highly suggested for next year.

          Wildcat Academy – update – Marsha Atwood

·        The Academy was full and was a success.  Discussion was brought up of ideas for next year. 

-Fall semester start date    

·        Will be determined after start of school by PAC Board

          Bulletin Board – Kim Jones

·        Looks good – to be left up over the summer per

Mrs. Everett

          New Board Member suggestions

·        Suggestions were made to Mrs. Everett for new board members

          Review/status of Archive Topics:

               -Weather delays/closures

o       Discussed reasons from BOE meeting in regards to reasons for county wide closing/delays

-Chairman binder & checklist

o       Lynn will get to Marsha Atwood, New chair for 09/10

-Visitor Registration

o       BOE is looking at Countywide Options

-MyLunchMoney.com

o       Linda Fairchild is looking into options

-Honor Guard – 5th grade

o       Mrs. Everett decided that this was not a possibility due to the location of the flag pole

-Glossary of Terms – updates

o       Up and running – will be updated as needed and as new programs are added

 

 

II.       New Business

          What have you heard?

·        Pep Rally – discussion was had about possibly having two next year to boost enthusiasm for children

·        Questions were brought up about teachers possibly leaving/changes due to budget – a couple of teachers will be leaving due to moving with families – some teachers may be moved around in classes, Mrs. Everett will make decisions in the future

·        Are new teachers being hired?  Applications are being taken at the Central Office, however, some teachers are being transferred from school to school versus losing jobs.

·        Discussion was brought up about the issue of books and their appropriateness in the K-5 library and how to monitor children checking out books not suitable for their age. 

 

          DARE Graduation

Discussion was had about the guest speaker.  Suggestions were made for next year.  Mrs. Everett will address.

 

III.     Curriculum - Ms. Everett

  • EOG’s are finished – retakes being completed
  • Proficiency has increased since last year
  • Waiting on growth status report
  • Mrs. Everett is looking at possibly working on a grant this summer for a “Real Men Read” program.  This program would be boys meeting after school with a male volunteer to discuss books being read.  This is to promote reading for boys.

 

IV.     School Activities - Ms. Everett

  • This week is Media Movie Week
  • Remediation is taking place this week
  • Third Grade Quantile Testing is underway – through Metometrix – Fifth grade will test the week of June 3rd
  • Celebration of Excellence – being held at Civic Center in Morehead City
  • First Grade will soon be traveling to the Aquarium for a field trip
  • May 28th – May Birthday Party
  • 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades will be performing a musical on May 29th
  • Kindergarten Program and Picnic – May 29th at 11am
  • Spring Concert is June 1st in the gym
  • Field Day for 3-5th grades will be June 2nd; K-2 grades will have Field Day on June 3rd – Marines will be coming to work the games for the kids
  • Honor Roll Program – June 3rd –
  • A+ Trip – June 4th – Group will travel to Western Park to play games and have lunch
  • 5th Grade Graduation – June 5th – 9am

 

V.   PTO report - Martha Swiber

  • Spring Fling had net income between $11,200 and $11,500
  • Last Diary Queen Night done – good response
  • Zap A Snack fundraiser will be delivered to Cape Carteret Baptist Church on Thursday, May 28th for pickup.
  • Teachers’ wish lists that were turned in to PTO for items needed have been almost completed – Mrs. Deburkarte is working on the remaining request and where to use the money that is delegated to be spent

 

 

VI.     Transportation - Ms. Everett/Ms Patterson

  • WOES had two new buses – Numbers 133 and 137 have been retired by the county
  • A final “Best Bus Award” for the year to be announced
  • Cameras are installed on all buses and are making a huge impact with student behavior on the buses

 

VII.     Facilities/Maintenance - Ms. Everett

  • A proposal for a new parking lot for the school is being worked on for this summer – from bond money
  • WOES will be adding a new EC classroom for the 09/10 school year
