PAC BOARD MEETING

Thursday, January 21, 2010

 

Call meeting to order at approx. 8:50 am 

Members in attendance:  Ms. Everett, Marsha Atwood, Wendi Andrews, Khristy Benson, Ms. Patterson, Martha Swiber and Lisa Guarino        

I.   WOES PAC Projects 

a.   Updates

·        Secretary-Wendi

·        Newsletter-Bryson:  complete and ready for review, would like to hand out at next meet & greet

·        Bulletin Board-Wendi:  need to update; add info

·        Web Page-Martha: 

o       FAQ Page:  can be added, we provide the questions, Ms. Deburkarte will attach a link that will take user to the answer; PAC members to help Martha establish list of questions

o       Email:  user can’t leave anonymous email;  PAC can have its own email address

o       PTO:  have statement on PTO website clarifying PAC and PTO duties

·        Meet & Greet-Khristy:  January 22 at 2:45

·        Glossary of Terms:  Need a coordinator; users can access on PAC and DPI websites

b.   PAC presence:

·        Drop off line rotation on Thursdays at 7:30 am Khristy coordinating

·        PTO events:  wear pink shirts and try to attend; next event – Chick-fil-A in Morehead City, Jan. 28

·        EOG Meeting:  Ms. Hughes is planning an EOG meeting, can PAC help promote?

·        Business sponsored events – Mac working on 

II.  New Topics

a.   Carpool Line:  Ms. Everett sent letter home to parents reviewing drop-off/pick-up procedures; still having some problems with parents dropping children off at the flag pole – Ms. Patterson will stand at flag pole in the mornings to monitor traffic; have teachers read the letter to students so that children are aware of the procedures and can remind their parents; add to newsletter: children can’t be dropped off at flag pole or by the highway, also promote riding bus

c.   Snacks at lunch:  some parents are concerned about children not being allowed to buy snacks at lunch; parents can call or email Tammy and request a flag be put on their child’s lunch account with a note about when and how much the child is allowed to have (ex. snack on Friday only); snacks are set by grade level with younger grades not having as much freedom to purchase snacks (K=no snacks); if a parent wishes to purchase a snack for a child on a “no snack” day, snack must be consumed in the courtyard or parent can purchase a snack for the entire class to be eaten in their classroom (ex. ice cream); yourlunchmoney.com setup was not completed, Ms. Everett will check on setup

d.   Completing homework on bus ride home:  children are not allowed to complete their homework on the bus for safety reasons; no sharp objects are allowed out on the bus; some buses do not allow reading because children may miss their stop (at the discretion of bus driver); children working on homework may lose their work or may delay stopping time while the driver waits for them to put their papers and books back in their backpacks

e.   Academy:  begins 1st week of March

f.   HUG (Help Us Grow) – Guidance counselor coordinating volunteers to help in school; put in newsletter; Ms. Austin is contact 

III. Curriculum/School Activities - Ms. Everett

a.   Dare:  5th Grade started will last through April, have been asked to tone down some of the content

b.   3rd Grade Parent Night 02/04/10

c.   Kindergarten Registration:  02/25/10 from 2-7; child does not have to be present, need certified copy of birth certificate; tours will be set up sometime between then and end of school year

d.   Universal assessments are being conducted this month; 1st and 2nd are complete, 3rd is this week, Kindergarten next week; these are used to monitor students progress

e.   Honor Roll:  January 29; 8:20 – 3rd Grade, 9:20 – 4th Grade, 10:20 – 5th Grade

f.   100th Day of School:  February 4

g.   A+ Stars:  February 5

h.   White Oak has chosen not to do any type of relief for Haiti – there are sensitive issues in our community and other factors pertaining to recent changes in policy

i.   EOG Dates:  May 17-21; 14th – 5th Grade Science

j.   All 5th Grade students participated in a student survey for strategic planning 

IV.  PTO report – Kim Jones

     a.   Upcoming events

·        Chick-fil-A January 28, 2010

·        Spring Fling April 30, 2010

-          b.   PTO has recently purchased laptop batteries for the

teachers to replace their batteries as needed

c.   PTO will be selling WOES reusable shopping bags to raise money for the school

d.   PTO is purchasing trash cans with lids for playground areas  

V.   Facilities/Maintenance - Ms. Everett

·        School needs help promoting sale of light bulbs; $2 each, 18 and 23 watt; 800 left; put info in newsletter

·        WOES has been selected as a pilot school to begin an energy savings program; goal is to save on energy costs in county schools; Johnson Controls currently performing assessments and will discuss things school can do to become more energy efficient; program is talking stages, no changes have been made yet

·        Leaks:  had a leak in Ms. Patterson’s office after recent heavy rain (recurring problem)

 VI.  Transportation – Ms. Patterson

·        Best Behaved Bus program began in early January and the January winner will be announced next week

·        Encourage parents to allow their children to ride the bus; Ms. Patterson and Ms. Charlene can answer questions about bus routes and schedules (email or call); routes are determined by transportation director, not Ms. Patterson

 VII. Policy - Ms. Everett

·        Bullying:  in December legislature passed a new law concerning bullying; new definition; stressed importance of reporting; next Tuesday staff will meet to discuss these issues; Ms. Everett will also be meeting with 5th Grade students to discuss this issue 

VIII.Meeting Schedule:

·        Next meeting:  Thursday, February 18 at 8:45 am 

Questions/Comments/Concerns: 

·        Next Board of Education meeting is Tuesday, February 2, 2010 (5:30-6:30pm is the Public Comment timeframe with a special focus on the school system’s 2010-2011 budget.  There will be no PAC presentations on Feb. 2

·        Next Board of Education meeting with PAC presentations is on Tuesday, March 2 at 5:00 pm

·        Other schools:

o       Beaufort Elementary dedicating a mini museum to Michael J. Smith

o       Morehead City Primary is starting a Science Club for 4th and 5th Grades

o       Broad Creek Middle School is also creating clubs.

o       Bogue Sound Elementary are pursuing grants (WOES only school not title one in the county – not disadvantaged area or inner city)

o       Midway Day celebrated
