PAC BOARD MEETING MINUTES

Monday, April 27, 2009

Called meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. - In attendance:  Lynn Daly, Khristy Benson, Tara Patterson, Marsha Atwood, Martha Swiber, Lisa Guarino; Absent:   Mrs. Everett, Kim Jones, Bryson McLean, Mac Holz

Accept Minutes. – April minutes were accepted by all in attendance

I.   WOES PAC Projects

Newsletter - Marsha Atwood – We will try to complete the last newsletter of this school year before Spring Fling on May 8th in order to have copies to hand out at the PAC table during the event.  The last newsletter will have more bios (hopefully for the rest of the board members whose bios have not already been published).

Meet & Greet – Khristy Benson – 4/30 The chocolate is ready.  This is the last Meet & Greet of the school year.  Wear your shirts and be there by 2:30.

Wildcat Academy – update – Marsha Atwood - Traffic has been somewhat of a problem at pickup due to the remediation ending at the same time as the Academy (4:00).  There were a couple of days when a large field trip returned at 4:00 causing major backups on Hwy. 24.  Lynn suggested that parents of field trip children should be better informed about being required to collect their children off the buses rather than waiting in the pickup line. It was also suggested that teachers of remediation be asked to help keep the line moving by escorting children up the pickup line to reduce congestion.

Lynn inquired about sending a questionnaire out to Academy parents to obtain feedback to remind parents to spread the word about teaching opportunities at the Academy.  Marsha was to consider the idea of a questionnaire.

Bulletin Board – Kim Jones – Mac’s picture needs to be added.  Kim sent word to thank the person who changed the border on the PAC bulletin board.  Brenda Wooten changed the border for us.

Board Business Member –Ms Everett – approval?

Mac Holz was approved at the Board Business Member for a yearlong term beginning immediately.  Mike Hodges has emailed Mrs. Everett to express interest in being the Board Business Member sometime in the future.

          Review/status of Archive Topics:

               -Weather delays/closures

-Chairman binder & checklist
-Visitor Registration

-MyLunchMoney.com

-Honor Guard – 5th grade
-Glossary of Terms – updates

These topics will be reviewed at the May board meeting when more members are in attendance.

Lynn spoke about the development of the WOES PAC this school year.  There has been a significant improvement this year over prior years with the accomplishments of the Academy, PAC Newsletter and Meet & Greet which has greatly increased PAC member recognition.  Lynn thanked the board for their hard work as her term is ending this year.  Ms. Everett has invited all existing board members to return next year.  Board member with problems, questions or concerns about returning next year should direct them to Mrs. Everett.  We need at least one more board member to replace Lynn if all existing board members return.  Mrs. Everett would like someone new to the area or new to the school.  Khristy has a suggestion of someone living in Megan’s Bay who fits the criteria.  She has passed the information on to Ms. Patterson.

The Chair position is available for next year and Mrs. Everett asked that the existing board members vote on who would chair next year.  Khristy and Lisa nominated Marsha Atwood.  No other board members were nominated or requested to be nominated.  Marsha Atwood accepted the nomination.  Khristy and Martha volunteered to assist Marsha in attending the Board of Education meetings either by providing child care or attending meetings for her should the need arise.  The next Board of Education Meeting is May 5.

II.       New Business

          What have you heard?

-Egrades? – Lynn heard about Egrades which allows internet access to grades throughout the school year.  It is now available at Broad Creek and Croatan.  The program was developed by a Broad Creek student!!!  E-grades are being piloted at WOES but, at this point in time, there has been no discussion if we will do it again next year or if it will be used in the same manner as it is as Broad Creek or Croatan.

Lisa heard from students that some students were not able to participate in Relay for Life because they were on a field trip.  Ms. Patterson stated that the field trip was required by the county and was planned after Relay for Life.  The teachers explained the conflict to the students prior to the field trip.

Martha has heard complimentary comments about the new Rain Garden which were sponsored by a Coastal Federation Grant and Wal-Mart.  It was suggested that signage might promote the origins of the Rain Garden better.  Since Ms. Waterman helped work with the students who promoted the garden, Lynn offered to contact her about signage.

Martha also mentioned the tall grasses around the school.  Ms. Patterson informed everyone that, due to budget issues, the county postponed spring mowing and it will occur the week of April 27.

MyLunchMoney.com – Khristy mentioned that this program might prevent overcharges for students.  A student was charged for 74 vegetables during one lunch period.  We will discuss MyLunchMoney.com further at the May meeting.
