EDUCATION BEGINS WITH TRANSPORTATION

Routing & Bus Stops

School bus routing and bus stops are the responsibility of the school principal. The Transportation Director will assist the principal and will provide technical assistance.

1. Eligible Rider-

a. Lives outside the no-transport zone (determined by individual schools);
b. Lives within school district boundary;
c. Assigned to that school;
d. Student will be assigned to a stop when transportation is requested by parent.

2. Bus stops -

a. Principal shall plan bus routes in a way designed to conserve fuel and to use buses efficiently, including confining routes to the geographical area assigned to the school, eliminating overlapping routes, backtracking mileage and unnecessary trips, and reducing backing and deadheading to the first stop.

b. A route may not deviate from a general path of direction for a distance of less than one-half mile and then return to the original path except for groups of ten or more pupils, unescorted pupils in grades K-3 or special education pupils.

c. Unless safety factors require otherwise, principals may not plan bus stops closer together than 0.2 miles. Each student must be at the designated stop at the time of the bus's arrival.

d. Non-state maintained and municipal maintained roads: Buses will travel down for K-5 only, depending on road width, condition, non-gated entrance, adequate turn around, stop signs, growth cut for adequate sight and a signed homeowner's association permission form. (Use of Private Road Permission Agreement)

e. According to state law, the rated capacity of any school bus is the maximum passengers allowed on that bus at any one time. To avoid overcrowding, a student will be assigned to ONE BUS ONLY.

Day Care Transportation

Buses may make stops at day care centers if the following four conditions are met:

1. The student is eligible for transportation.
2. The bus is the student's regularly assigned bus for morning and afternoon.
3. There is space available on the bus.
4. The bus route follows proper routing procedures.
