Literacy Theory Podcasts

Here's a new dimension to the read/write web.  It is the speak/listen web.  Podcasts are recorded broadcasts saved usually in MP3 format.  They are uploaded to the web for personalized, just-in-time content consumption.

We have to start with David Warlick's recordings on New Literacy.  Each of these "lectures" takes about 20 minutes.

  • Listen to the first part of this interesting podcast posted on July 6, 2005. Orson Scott Card, an accomplished author and creative writing teacher, gives ideas on how to improve writing of students. His thoughts match perfectly with the conversation at our “round table.”

  • Literacy 1 (episode 19):  "My central question is, if the nature of information has changed during the past 10 years, shouldn't our definition of what it means to be literate also change?"
  • Literacy 2 (episode 20):  "The main issue is that information is increasingly networked, meaning that we can no long assume its authority. The skills that I outline are Finding the Information, Decoding the Information, Critically evaluating the Information, Organizing the Information.
  • Literacy 3 (episode 21, audio link pending):  "In this episode, I'm talking about math in the 21st century. Just like expanding what it means to be a reader in the 21st century, arithmetic becomes much more, since all information is now made of numbers."
  • Literacy 4 (episode 22, audio link pending):  "In this installment of the Literacy Series, I provide a review of what reading and math evolve into in the new information environment, and also provide some details about communicating."
  • Literacy 5 (episode 23, audio link pending):  a summary of thoughts and an Information Code of Ethics.

J. P. Moore, an educational technologist from Jersey City, chronicles his insights in One Big Head.
