-
The school should not rely on AR as its reading program.
- No irrelevant prizes or money should be
offered (grades
?). If prizes are given, good options include
trips to Joyner
Library (ECU) or inexpensive paperback books.
- Keep AR as an incentive program but have
students compete against themselves only.
- Acknowledge
or recognize readers at graduations and EOY ceremonies
-
The acknowledgement / recognition should be a combo of AR and
literary genre reading.
-
Younger students should be able to master (read) the AR quizzes on
their own in order to participate in AR.
-
At what age--if any--should students be
allowed to have open book AR quizzes?
-
Books should be intershelved (Dewey Decimal)
w/ AR reading level notations.
-
Students may select any book after they have met the following
three goals for AR:
- earn
9 AR pts. from 3 different books
- choose
/ read books in their range
- score
80 or above (or retests)
- ELA
teachers should monitor students' reading levels and
comprehension.
- Reading
logs are necessary to the success of an AR program.
Teachers need to monitor these reading logs to help students
reach their goals.
- DEAR,
LEAP, SSR should not be used as AR time. Students should
be allowed to read for pleasure, recreation, information,
knowledge, etc.
- The cut off date for A/R points
during the last nine weeks of school should early, possibly
the day before the start of EOG testing.
