System Web Site Regulations

A primary purpose of Carteret County Public School System websites is to communicate effectively consistent and current information with the community. Schools and departments are encouraged to develop and maintain their own websites that provide information to the community about instruction, curriculum, school-authorized activities and other general information about schools and central office.  All information posted on the school system’s web server should adhere to the following standards:

a)      Website

a.      All subject matter on the website should relate to instruction, curriculum, school-authorized activities, general information that is appropriate and of interest to the community, or it should relate to the Carteret County Public School System central office and departments and their operation.

b.      Teachers and school system employees are responsible for maintaining their class or educational resource sites. These web pages must be developed in such a manner as to reflect well upon the system and school.

c.      Students may create a website as part of a class or school activity. Material presented on a student class or school activity must meet the educational objectives of the class/school activity and be approved by the web keeper.

d.      No personal home pages for school system employees or students are part of the Carteret County Public School System website; nor will links to personal home pages be placed on the Carteret County Public School System website.

e.      All policy provisions, including those addressing inappropriate language, privacy, and copyright, govern material placed on the system website.

f.       Links to sites outside the Carteret County Public School System website are only allowed to sites that have a directly related purpose to the educational or informational mission of the department or school webpage.

g.      Any concerns about the website may be addressed to the webkeeper.

b)      Maintenance Standards

a.      Each school or department has a web keeper. This person must be an employee of that school or department. This person is responsible for seeing that the website is updated on a regular basis so that all information is timely, accurate, and current. This person is also responsible for transferring files to the web server.

b.      Others in the department or school, including students and/or parents, may help with the creation, design, and maintenance of the content.

c.      The web keeper should review all web pages prior to their transfer to the system web server.

c)      Design Standards

a.      The homepage of each school website includes the site name, a link to the Carteret County Public School System Homepage, identification of the site on the title bar, the email address of the website administrator, and may include the date the website was last updated.

b.      All links, both external and internal, should be checked frequently for accuracy.

d)      Privacy Standards

a.      Pictures of students may be included on web pages to highlight activities. Pictures of K-8 students may only be identified by the name of the activity or by limited student identification. Individual photos of students may not be published unless the parent or guardian has signed the Carteret County Public School System student agreement. Pictures of 9-12 students may be identified by limited or full student identification depending upon parental permission.

b.      K-8 student work and recognition published on the website can be identified by the limited student identifier. Full names of students will not be used on web pages. 9-12 student work and recognition may be identified by limited or full student identification depending upon parental permission.  No other student information, such as address, home phone number or email address will be allowed on web pages. 

c.      School system employees’ pictures should only be used with the school system employees’ permission. Publishing school system employees’ email addresses should be limited to the school system email account available to all school system employees. No home email addresses or any other personal information should be published.

d.      Class rolls or team rosters may only be published for elementary/middle schools using the limited student identification with parental permission.  Class rolls or team rosters may only be published for high schools using either the limited student identification or full name, depending upon parental permission.
