Serving
a coastal North Carolina community, the Carteret County
Public School System is an example of a school system that
launched an educational technology rocket ship. Prior
to 1994, educational technology in county public schools was
inconsistent and specialized.
Anticipating the benefits for students that
widespread access to technology would bring, the community
overwhelmingly supported a 29 million dollar bond referendum
in the fall of 1994 that included 6.25 million dollars for
technology.
This resulted in
the addition of 2-3 computers per K-8 classroom, 1-2
computers per 9-12 classroom, and computer labs and local
area networks in all schools.
Purchase of this amount of hardware necessitated a
massive staff development agenda, which in turn pushed the
agenda for human infrastructure in technology.
Today, the Carteret County Public School System is
recognized as being on the forefront of system-wide
deployment and integration of educational technology in a
K-12 setting.

The Carteret
County Schools Central Office, a small central office
building, serves as the central management point for
17 schools, 1 Educational Center, and the maintenance
department. Technically
speaking, the central office building serves as a
cloud, or hub, through which all Internet traffic in
the school system is routed. |
