LENC Kicks Off Final Year in County Schools

Thirty-four county school system teachers participated in LENC Academy on August 2 at Harkers Island.  This year’s participants include teachers from Atlantic, Beaufort Elementary, Bogue Sound, Harkers Island, Morehead Elementary, Morehead Primary, Newport Elementary, Smyrna, and White Oak.  The annual LENC Academy marks the official start of the Learning Environments for the New Century (LENC) project funded by a grant from the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund.

LENC provides for participating teachers to attend the Academy and then spend two days with technology facilitators and mentor teachers.  The focus is on curricular goals, educational strategies, student engagement, and teacher roles.

LENC participants develop active learning modules that enhance state and local curriculum guidelines and that take advantage of comprehensive learning environments.

LENC is in its fifth and final year of funding in Carteret County schools.  A total of 154 county teachers representing all sixteen schools have participated in LENC since the project began in 1997.  The program is directed by Janet McLendon and has earned numerous state and national recognitions over the years.
