Approximate time required: 1 hour
In this lesson the children will take a
poll and sort the data. The students will learn to enter the
data to create a spreadsheet and create a bar graph and pie
graph.

2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze and
display data.
2.6 Identify the parts of a spreadsheet.
2.7 Enter and edit data in a prepared spreadsheet and observe
the results.
3.1 Create, save, and print a word processed document.
3.3 Use a prepared spreadsheet to enter and graph data as a
group activity.
Materials / Resources needed:
Computer with spreadsheet program with ability to create bar
graph.
Teacher's Lesson Goals / Objectives:
Identify key terms of spreadsheet.
Enter data in spreadsheet.
Create graph with labels.
Write sentence(s) about information obtained from graph.
Save and print document.
Pre Activities
Discuss the different types of fruits
Discussion of Spreadsheet terms.
Review previous work with spreadsheet as group.
Create a tally sheet on the class favorite fruits to be
entered into spreadsheet in the lab.
Activity:
Using printed directions, use data from bar
graph and input data onto spreadsheet.
Create and label graph (pie and/or bar).
Cut and paste graph to new document.
Type sentence(s) about graph.
Assessment: The student will be
assessed on the ability to produce a spreadsheet with
the gathered data and the ability to produce a graph with the
given data.
Additional Comments: This lesson can be
used with any type of data gathering activity.
Below are the directions to create this
project using ClarisWorks spreadsheet.
Click on ClarisWorks
Click on Spreadsheet
Click OK
Click on cell A1 and type in label.
Enter data in A2, A3, etc.
Click on cell B1 and type in label.
Enter data in B2, B3, etc.
Click on A1 drag down to last entry. Highlight
all columns.
Click on options (on menu bar) >>>> Drag to Make
Chart.
After creating pie graph or bar graph, leave
handles on chart.
Go to Edit and drag to cut.
Go to File and drag to new.
Click on Word processing.
Click on page centering.
Press return about 5 times to move cursor down.
Go to Edit and drag to paste.
Move cursor below graph and type a sentence(s) about the information
found on the graph.
