This activity will take three 45 minute
class periods
Curriculum Areas NC Standard Course of
Study:
ELA Objectives:
- Records that the student knows, wants to
know, and has learned by writing in learning log.
- Shows recall of visual patterns by using
conventional spelling most of the time.
- Uses paragraphs to organize information and
ideas and maintains the topic focus.
- Edits to verify and self correct spelling.
Math Objectives:
4.01 Gather and organize data from surveys and classroom
experiments,
including data collected over a period of time.
4.02 Display data on charts and graphs: picture, bar and line
plots;
describe data using mode.
4.03 Construct graphs where symbols or scales represent
multiple units.
Computer Technology Objectives:
1.2 Recognize that the Copyright Law protects what a person,
group, or company has
created.
1.3 Recognize the benefits of word processing.
2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze, and
display data.
2.3 Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower
case
letters.
2.6 Identify the parts of a spreadsheet.
2.7 Enter and edit data in a prepared spreadsheet and observe the
results.
3.3 Use a prepared spreadsheet to enter and graph data as a group
activity.
Materials / Resources needed:
Computer with spreadsheet program with ability to create bar
graph and pie graph.
Objective
Today we will build a bar graph using a spreadsheet program called
ClarisWorks for Kids.
What students will be doing.
Students will collect data in the classroom
(i.e., money, Fruit Loops).
Students will record their data on notebook paper. Then, they will
type a
paragraph explaining what they have done.
In the computer lab students use ClarisWorks
for Kids to construct a bar
graph. They will label the graph subjects, and enter the data
information
they collected in the classroom.
The second day in the computer lab students
will retrieve the spreadsheet
they created earlier and word process the paragraph they completed
in the
classroom.
Review
Teacher reviews proper keyboarding using the home keys and discuss
Copyright Laws and ownership.
Teacher Input
In the computer lab the Teacher instructs students in opening
ClarisWorks
for Kids, and finding and opening spreadsheet with the bar graph.
Instruct
students in typing in the graph title, their name, and the first
item and the
data collected in the classroom. Teacher will instruct students on
how to
retrieve their graph they created earlier and will ask students to
demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case
letters.
Guided Practice
Take students through listing the second item and typing in the
number of
that item found.
Independent Practice
Students finish typing in the items and numbers, constructing the
bar graph.
They type a paragraph explaining what they have done. Save to print
later.
Closure
Review the steps taken in the lesson on bar graphs and spread
sheets. Review
ownership of their work and copyright. Print their bar graphs.

Sample Paragraph
We counted the coins in our
classroom bank. Then we used a calculator to get
their values. The coins in our classroom bank were worth
$32.71. Here is a
bar graph to show our data.
