Using Scholastic News  to Introduce the Net

Brief Description:  Students will log on to the net, type in the address for Scholastic and browse the subjects available for the week.  They will select one area of interest and generate five interesting facts about the article.

Approximate time required: 45 minutes 

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives 
Language Arts:

1.04 Increase sight vocabulary, reading vocabulary, and writing vocabulary through:

  • wide reading.
  • word study.
  • listening.
  • discussion.
  • book talks.
  • book clubs.
  • seminars.
  • viewing.
  • role play.

  • studying author's craft.
2.02 Interact with the text before, during, and after reading, listening, or viewing by:
  • setting a purpose.
  • previewing the text.
  • making predictions.
  • asking questions.
  • locating information for specific purposes.
  • making connections.

  • using story structure and text organization to comprehend.
2.03 Read a variety of texts, including: 
  • fiction (short stories, novels, fantasies, fairy tales, fables). 
  • nonfiction (biographies, letters, articles, procedures and instructions, charts, maps). 
  • poetry (proverbs, riddles, limericks, simple poems). 

  • drama (skits, plays). 
2.04 Identify and interpret elements of fiction and nonfiction and support by referencing the text to determine the: 
  • author's purpose.
  • plot.
  • conflict.
  • sequence.
  • resolution.
  • lesson and/or message.
  • main idea and supporting details.
  • cause and effect. 
  • fact and opinion. 
  • point of view (author and character).

  • author's use of figurative language (e.g., simile, metaphor, imagery). 
2.05 Draw conclusions, make generalizations, and gather support by referencing the text.
3.06 Conduct research for assigned and self-selected projects (with assistance) from a variety of sources (e.g., print and non print texts, artifacts, people, libraries, databases, computer networks).

Technology
1.4 Recognize how electronic databases are used in the community.
2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
2.2 Identify the physical components of a computer system as either input, output, or processing devices
2.5 Recognize the differences between print and electronic databases. 
2.11 Use telecommunications to locate community information as a group/class project.
3.4 Evaluate the usefulness of information obtained using telecommunication technologies.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will connect to the internet, type in the address and search through Scholastic, selecting an item of interest.  They will collect and record five facts regarding the article.

Materials/Resources Needed: 
Teacher will demonstrate:

  1. connecting to the web , 
  2. locating the Scholastic web site
  3. searching for information 
  4. using the SMARTBOARD.
Pre Activities:
  1. Students need to know and use home keys.
  2. Students need to listen and follow directions, using their basic knowledge of technology that we have learned thus far.
Activities:   Guided Practice

1. Teacher will demonstrate the opening of the net.  Students will follow.  Teacher and Asst. will check for each student's success.
2. Teacher will type in address for scholastic...http://www.scholasticnews.com
3. Students will follow, with T and A  monitor.
4. Teacher will demonstrate opening a section of SN,  students follow. T & A monitor.

Independent Practice

5. Students browse Scholastic News, selecting a section of interest to read.
6. Students write five facts they find about their topic of choice.  Later, these facts will be shared orally in the classroom.
 

Closure:
Teacher reviews steps in getting connected to web, typing an address and opening a site on the net.  All of this is done using the SMARTBOARD.

Assessment:
Teacher can use several methods of assessment.  I will use teacher observation for the actual mechanics of using the web.  Also, question and answer will be used to evaluate the facts the students generate from their article.
