Adding Flags and States to your State Report

Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Social Studies, Technology

Brief Description:   Use of word processing, editing text and adding images from the Internet site to a document.  Students learn about copyright, fair use, how to evaluate web sites and citing sources. 

Approximate time required: 1 to 2 weeks.

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives: 
Technology
1.2 Recognize that the Copyright Law protects what a person, group, or company has created.
1.3 Recognize the benefits of word processing.
1.5 Identify telecommunications technologies used to locate information.
2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data. 
2.3 Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters.

2.4 Retrieve and edit a word-processed documents.
2.11 Use telecommunications to locate community information as a group/class project.
3.1 Create, save, and print a word-processed document.
3.4 Evaluate the usefulness of information obtained using telecommunication technologies.

Social Studies:
2.3 Assess similarities and differences among communities in different times and in different places.
7.1 Identify and explain the importance of selected persons, patriotic symbols, and public observances.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will use the Internet to find state information for their report.. They will use desktop publishing skills to prepare their report.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • Computer Lab computers
  • printer, 
  • print material from media center
  • web site: http://www.50states.com
  • rough draft of report

Pre Activities

  1. Teacher reviews copyright, fair use and taking about citing sources used. 
  2. Student discuss and define the difference between desktop publishing and word processing. 
  3. Students pick one of the fifty states.
  4. Teacher and students discuss how to evaluate the usefulness of information obtained on the web.
  5. Students research and prepare state report using print and non print material (http://www.50states.com).
  6. Students word process their report. 
  7. Students use the following desktop publishing skills:
    1. Center, Bold and make the Title 14pt.
    2. Left align and Double space the report
    3. Use spell check, and save document. 
  8. Students name and save document to their folder on the server

Activities

  1. Teacher demonstrates how to minimize and maximize page
  2. Open "Internet Explorer" browser and go to http://www.50states.com
  3. Click on the folder beside the state you have selected.   
  4. Find the image you want to use in your report.  
  5. Click and hold down the mouse button on the images until a window pops up (on Mac) or right click (on Win).
  6. Choose copy image
  7. Go the "Internet Explorer" (At Ease) icon located in the upper right hand corner of your monitor.
  8. Choose "At Ease"
  9. Click on the blue student folder
  10. Locate and open the state research report document you saved earlier
  11. Once you open the AppleWorks file, click on the "hide/show toolbar" (located in the lower left corner of the AppleWorks screen).
  12. Click on the "arrow pointer" on the toolbar
  13. Go to "Edit" on the menu bar and choose "Paste"
  14. Click on the image and move it to its proper location.
  15. Repeat steps 4-16 for additional images. 
  16. Cite Source of clip art
  17. Save document
  18. Print final copy for display

Closure:  Review the process of entering images in your report.

Assessment:
Rubric Score for a perfect (4)

Student observed copyright and fair use by citing sources of images and text.
Student could create, save, and print a word-processed document with no assistance.
Student used proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters.
Student could retrieve and edit a word-processed documents
Student could independently locate http://www.50states.com website for report.
