Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Technology, ELA, Science, S.S. and Information Skills

Brief Description: Students will utilize technology to access, analyze, interpret and communicate information about Earth Day.

Approximate time required: 1 week

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Technology:

1.4 Recognize how electronic databases are used in the community.
2.11 Use telecommunications to locate community information as a group/class project.
3.2 Locate and use information in electronic databases.
3.4 Evaluate the usefulness of information obtained using telecommunication technologies.
Science: 
1.02 Observe how environmental conditions can determine how well plants grow and survive in a particular environment.
Social Studies:
 
1.1 Identify attributes of good citizenship
1.2 Cite skills of good citizenship.
Information Skills: 
1.09 Recognize that ideas are produced in a variety of formats (print, graphical, audio, video, multimedia, web-based).
2.03 Recognize the diversity of ideas and thoughts by exploring a variety of resources (print, non-print, electronic) and formats (print, graphical, audio, video, multimedia, web-based).
5.01 Respond to reading, listening, viewing experiences orally, artistically, dramatically, through various formats (e.g., print, multimedia).
English/LA:  
1.03 Integrate prior experiences and all sources of information in the text (graphophonic, syntactic, and semantic) when reading orally and silently.
1.04 Increase sight vocabulary, reading vocabulary, and writing vocabulary through:

  • wide reading. 
  • word study.
  • listening.
  • discussion.
  • book talks.
  • book clubs.
  • seminars.
  • viewing.
  • role play.
  • studying author’s craft.

2.01 Use metacognitive strategies to comprehend text (e.g., reread, read ahead, ask for help, adjust reading speed, question, paraphrase, retell).
2.02 Interact with the text before, during, and after reading, listening, or viewing by:

  • setting a purpose.
  • previewing the text.
  • making predictions.
  • asking questions.
  • locating information for specific purposes.
  • making connections.
  • using story structure and text organization to comprehend.

2.03 Read a variety of texts, including:

  • fiction (short stories, novels, fantasies, fairy tales, fables).
  • nonfiction (biographies, letters, articles, procedures and instructions, charts, maps).
  • poetry (proverbs, riddles, limericks, simple poems).
  • drama (skits, plays).

2.04 Identify and interpret elements of fiction and nonfiction and support by referencing the text to determine the:

  • author’s purpose.
  • plot.
  • conflict.
  • sequence.
  • resolution.
  • lesson and/or message.
  • main idea and supporting details.
  • cause and effect.
  • fact and opinion.
  • point of view (author and character).
  • author’s use of figurative language (e.g., simile, metaphor, imagery).

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of the computer. The learner will access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate information.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

Pre Activities: 

  1. Class discusses how databases are used in the community and how the Internet is the largest database. 
  2. Learn steps for accessing Internet 
  3. Learn steps for accessing particular Search Engines 
  4. Learn basic operational terms and cues.
  5. Students use a rubric to evaluate information found via telecommunications for content and usefulness.  

Activities:

  1. Access Earth Day Sites 
  2. Read and evaluate information 

Closure: Knowledge gained about Earth Day will be used as a springboard to a variety of Science, S.S. and ELA projects to include posters, discussions, writings, and home activities.

Assessment: Students are assessed in reading comprehension, and basic knowledge gained about science and social studies with respect to Earth Day.
