Graphing Favorite Holidays

This activity will take two 45 minute lab sessions. First session is teacher modeling and
second session is students creating the spreadsheet in the lab.

Curriculum Areas NC Standard Course of Study:

Math
Competency Goal 4:  The learner will demonstrate an understanding of data collection, display, and interpretation.
4.01 Gather and organize data from surveys and classroom experiments, including data collected over a period of time.
4.02 Display data on charts and graphs: picture, bar and line plots; describe data using mode.
4.03 Construct graphs where symbols or scales represent multiple units.
4.04 Read and interpret graphs and charts (bar, picture, circle, line and line plots) as sources of information;
        identify main idea, draw conclusions and make predictions.

ELA Objectives:

  • Records that the student knows, wants to know, and has learned by writing in learning log.
  • Shows recall of visual patterns by using conventional spelling most of the time.
  • Uses paragraphs to organize information and ideas and maintains the topic focus.
  • Edits to verify and self correct spelling.
Computer Technology Objectives:
1.3 Recognize the benefits of word processing.
2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
2.3 Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters.
2.6 Identify the parts of a spreadsheet.
2.7 Enter and edit data in a prepared spreadsheet and observe the results.
3.3 Use a prepared spreadsheet to enter and graph data as a group activity.

Materials / Resources needed:
 ClarisWorks for Kids Graphing program.
 Computer connection to the TV or presentation system
 Printer

Teacher's Lesson Goals / Objectives:
 Identify key terms of spreadsheet.
 Enter data in spreadsheet.
 Create graph with labels.
 Write sentence(s) about information obtained from graph.
 Save and print document.

Pre Activities
 Discuss the different holidays and how they are celebrated.
 Discussion of Spreadsheet terms.
 Review previous work with spreadsheet as group.
 Create a tally sheet on the class' favorite holiday to be entered into spreadsheet in the lab.

Activity:
The teacher will present demonstrate/model how to do the following on the T.V. or visual, for whole group instruction

  1. Use Holiday Student survey/tally to graph "Favorite Holidays" using ClarisWorks for Kids Graphing Program
  2. Open ClarisWorks for Kids
    • choose graph pad
    • choose bar graph
    • click, highlight
    • type title (Favorite Holidays)
      • type in topic head (Holidays)
      • type in each of the holiday
      • Type in People in the title
      • type in the (measurement/number of people)
    • Look and analysis the graph and watch what happens when the numbers change.
    • In the Notes box,  enter in our own words the observed results of the spreadsheet.
Guided Practice and Independent Practice:
Students go to the computer lab and create individual spreadsheets with supervision using the same steps the teacher modeled.
Students word processing results of evaluating the bar graph.

Closure:
Students discuss and review the Competency Goals.  Students also celebrate their products by printing then sharing
their results with the class and display their graphs on the bulletin board.

Assessment:
The printout will be graded using a rubric.  To earn the entire 4 points

  1. Tallies correctly entered
  2. Headings and Subheadings are labeled correctly
  3. Spelling and punctuation is correct
  4. Notes are in complete sentences.
  5. Explain of notes is accurate
