"Favorite Fairy Tale Characters"

This will take 45 minute class periods for the graphing activity.

Curriculum Areas NC Standard Course of Study:

Math Grade 3
     4.0.1 Gather and Organize data from surveys and classroom experiments including data collected over a period of time.
     4.0.2 Display data on charts and graphs: picture, bar and line plots; describe data using mode.
     4.0.0 Construct graphs where symbols or scales represent multiple units.

 Computer Technology Objectives:
      1.3 Recognize the benefits of word processing.
      2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
      2.3   Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters.
      2.6   Identify the parts of a spreadsheet.
      2.7   Enter and edit data in a prepared spreadsheet and observe the results.
      3.3   Use a prepared spreadsheet to enter and graph data as a group activity.

Materials Needed
  a.  fairy tale books
  b.  survey of favorite characters
  c.  ClarisWorks for Kids software (computer lab)

Pre Activity
 Students will spend several weeks reading and studying fairy tales.  As a culminating activity students will pick five of their
favorite fairy tale characters.  Then they will conduct a survey and gather data.

Activity
 Students will use ClarisWorks for Kids to enter the results of their survey on a spreadsheet.  Then they will construct a
bar graph showing the results of their survey.

 Assessment
 Children will display graphs in the hall as well as their survey sheets so everyone can see if their graphs match data from
the survey sheets.
