Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Social Studies, Math, and Technology

Brief Description: Students will participate in an election project. The data collected will be used to create a spreadsheet from which a graph will be generated.

Approximate time required: 45 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Social Studies:
5.2 Summarize the elective process in the community and distinguish between elected and appointed officials.
Math:
4.01 Gather and organize data from surveys and classroom experiments, including data collected over a period of time.
4.02 Display data on charts and graphs
4.04 Read and interpret graphs and charts
Technology:
1.3 Recognize the benefits of word processing
2.1 Identify the technology tools used to collect, analyze and display data
2.6 Identify the parts of a spreadsheet
3.1 Create, save, and print a word processed document.
3.3 Use a prepared spreadsheet to enter and graph data as a group activity.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will use the computer to generate a bar graph with data collected in the class. Then by accessing http://gcv.mms.com/us/, students will participate in a global voting process.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

Pre Activities:

  1. Discuss elective process in a community.
  2. Set up classroom voting booth and ballots for *M & M*s Global Color Vote*
  3. Each student will vote and data will be collected.
  4. Review previous work with spreadsheet
  5. Review previous work with graphs
  6. As a group, create a sheet with the data necessary for creating a spreadsheet and a graph.

Activities:

  1. Students will access spreadsheet through AppleWorks
  2. Using printed and oral directions, students will input data onto a spreadsheet.
  3. Create and label a bar graph.
  4. Copy the bar graph and then open a new word processing document and paste the created bar graph.
  5. Type a brief summary of the graph and then type name.

Closure:

  • Each student will print their graph and summary.
  • Accessing the http://gcv.mms.com/us/  on the Internet, each student will participate in a global vote for their choice of the new color of *M & M*s*.

Assessment: The students will be assessed on their ability to produce a quality graph from a spreadsheet utilizing gathered data.
