Subjects: Reading, Writing, Math, Speaking, Science,
Social Studies
Description: Students have been studying how animals
are different including life cycles, habitats, foods, and
enemies. We have researched our favorite animals and
presented our information through the use of our puppet stage
and stick puppets which the students made. Stories,
poems and acrostic writings were written.
Time required: 3 to 4 weeks
Goals and Objectives:
Reading-R4: Constructs meaning from literary,
informational, and practical texts.
Speaking/Listening-SL2: Elaborates orally on how
information and events connect to life experiences.
Math-Goal 4: The learner will demonstrate an
understanding of data collection, display, and
interpretation.
Objective 4.1: Collect, sort, organize, and display
information in charts, graphs, and tables with correct
labeling.
Objective 4.2: Summarize and interpret information in
charts, graphs, and tables.
Science-Goal 1: The learner will build an
understanding of plant and animal life cycles.
Objective 1.03: Analyze the life cycle of animals.
Objective l.04: Compare and contrast life cycles of
different animals.
Social Studies-Goal 8: The learner will apply
basic geography concepts and terminology.
Objective 8.3: Identify indigenous vegetation and animal
life in neighborhoods.
Technology-1.1: Identify uses of technology in the
community.
1.2: Recognize a person's right of ownership to computer
generated work.
2.3: Use correct finger placement for home row keys.
2.6: Use a graphing program to enter data and graph
the results.
3.2: Interpret data on charts and graphs and make
predictions.
Behavioral Objective: The students will collect data
from classmates as to their Favorite Animal. Then the
student will use the ClarisWorks graphing program to enter
data, graph results, and inter-pret data to others.
Materials needed:
- Chart on which to record data
- Data collected
- Computer
- ClarisWorks software
Pre Activities:
- Students will discuss use of technology in daily lives.
- Students will be able to tally correctly.
- Students will be familiar with animal names.
- Students will have had concrete graphing experiences.
- Students will be familiar with ClarisWorks computer
program.
Activities:
- The teacher will model graphing on computer using
ClarisWorks.
- The students will use data collected on Favorite Animals
to record on a graph in ClarisWorks computer program.
- The teacher will monitor as students are using software
giving assistance as needed.
- The students will print, interpret graph, and share
results with classmates.
Closure: Students will print a bar graph and share the
results with classmates. We will discuss the use of a
pie graph to show the same results as the bar graph.
Assessment: Observation
- Did the student collect and record data correctly on
tally chart?
- Did the student open the graphing program correctly?
- Did the student transfer the data correctly?
- Did the student interpret the graph correctly when
sharing with peers?
Observation: This lesson has been observed by Donna
Howard (assistant) and Sonya Lewis in the computer lab when
using ClarisWorks.
