Subjects: Reading, Writing, Math, Speaking, Science, Social Studies

Description: Students have been studying how animals are different including life cycles, habitats, foods, and enemies.  We have researched our favorite animals and presented our information through the use of our puppet stage and stick puppets which the students made.  Stories, poems and acrostic writings were written.

Time required: 3 to 4 weeks
Goals and Objectives:

Reading-R4: Constructs meaning from literary, informational, and practical texts.
Speaking/Listening-SL2: Elaborates orally on how information and events connect to life experiences.

Math-Goal 4: The learner will demonstrate an understanding of data collection, display, and interpretation.
Objective 4.1: Collect, sort, organize, and display information in charts, graphs, and tables with correct labeling.
Objective 4.2: Summarize and interpret information in charts, graphs, and tables.

Science-Goal 1: The learner will build an understanding of plant and animal life cycles.
Objective 1.03: Analyze the life cycle of animals.
Objective l.04: Compare and contrast life cycles of different animals.

Social Studies-Goal 8: The learner will apply basic geography concepts and terminology.
Objective 8.3: Identify indigenous vegetation and animal life in neighborhoods.

Technology-1.1: Identify uses of technology in the community.
1.2: Recognize a person's right of ownership to computer generated work.
 2.3: Use correct finger placement for home row keys.
 2.6: Use a graphing program to enter data and graph the results.
 3.2: Interpret data on charts and graphs and make predictions.

Behavioral Objective: The students will collect data from classmates as to their Favorite Animal.  Then the student will use the ClarisWorks graphing program to enter data, graph results, and inter-pret data to others.

Materials needed:

  1. Chart on which to record data
  2. Data collected
  3. Computer
  4. ClarisWorks software


Pre Activities:

  1. Students will discuss use of technology in daily lives.
  2. Students will be able to tally correctly.
  3. Students will be familiar with animal names.
  4. Students will have had concrete graphing experiences.
  5. Students will be familiar with ClarisWorks computer program.
Activities:
  1. The teacher will model graphing on computer using ClarisWorks.
  2. The students will use data collected on Favorite Animals to record on a graph in ClarisWorks computer program.
  3. The teacher will monitor as students are using software giving assistance as needed.
  4. The students will print, interpret graph, and share results with classmates.
Closure: Students will print a bar graph and share the results with classmates.  We will discuss the use of a pie graph to show the same results as the bar graph.

Assessment: Observation

  1. Did the student collect and record data correctly on tally chart?
  2. Did the student open the graphing program correctly?
  3. Did the student transfer the data correctly?
  4. Did the student interpret the graph correctly when sharing with peers?
Observation: This lesson has been observed by Donna Howard (assistant) and Sonya Lewis in the computer lab when using ClarisWorks.
