Jelly Beans Bar Graph

Brief Description: The students will construct a bar graph using jelly beans.
Approximate time required: 20 minutes
Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives :
English Language Arts

1.01 Model numbers in a variety of ways.
1.02 Read, write and count using whole numbers; rote count
forward to 30 or beyond and backward from 10.
1.03 - Use 1-1 correspondence to identify how many (0-10).
1.07 Create and identify sets with more, less, or equal
members by matching.
3.02 - Sort by a given attribute.
4.01 - Collect data to create concrete and pictorial graphs and describe the results as a group activity.
Science
3.01 - Describe objects in terms of their physical properties (color).
Technology
2.1 - Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
2.2 - Place the cursor at a specified location.
2.3 - Identify items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.
3.1 - Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.
Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will move the cursor at the end of the color words, type the correct number of jelly beans for each color
and watch the pre- construct bar graph change, and type his/her name.
Materials/Resources Needed:
- Computer
- AppleWorks Jelly
Bean spreadsheet on computer,
- Bag of 12 jelly beans of assorted colors

TV monitor or projection
system

Printer and paper
Pre Activities: The students will have prior knowledge of reading color words and sorting by a given attribute.
Activities:
- Teacher will give the student a bag of 12 jelly beans of five assorted colors.
- The student will sort the jelly beans by colors.
- The student will count how many of each color.
GUIDED PRACTICE:
Using the computer displayed on the television screen, the teacher will demonstrate
how to enter data into a spreadsheet and watch the graph
change as the data is entered.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
- The student will use the computer to
enter data and watch the pre-constructed bar graph change
a. The student will read the color words.
b. The student will manipulate the mouse to place the cursor at the end of a
color
word.
c. The student will type the correct number for each color of the jelly
beans. (The student will see the construction of the bar graph as he/she types each number.)
d. The student will type his/her name on line 8.
e. Students answer "how many" and "more,
less, or equal" (math
objective 1.03 and 1.07) questions created by teacher
2. With
teacher's help, the student will print the completed bar graph to take
home
Closure: The students may eat the jelly beans at the completion of the bar graph.
Assessment:
- Observation:
Students can place the cursor at a specified location.
- Observation: Students
identified their colors and grouped jelly beans by color
- Check as mastered when
name is printed: Students correctly type their
name by locating and using letters, and special keys.
- Check as mastered when
data is printed: Students counted each pile of colored
jelly beans and entered data into the spreadsheet correctly.
- Check as mastered when
teacher listens for response: Students correctly
answer "how many" and "more,
less, or equal"
questions created by teacher.
