Brief Description:  In a small group lesson, the students will manipulate the computer mouse to place the cursor on a numeral to match the correct number of foods, using Kidspiration.

Approximate time required: 20 minutes 

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Health 
1.01 - Describing influences on health, e.g., food, rest, exercise, and hygiene/cleanliness.
Math 
1.01 - Model numbers in a variety of ways.
1.02 - Read, write and count using whole numbers.
1.03 - Use 1-1 correspondence to identify how many (0-10).
1.04 - Recognize numerals and match to sets 0-10.
2.06 - Name the days of the week.
Technology 
1.2 - Identify the physical components of a computer system.
1.3 - Demonstrate respect for the work of others.
1.4 - Demonstrate correct care and use of computers.
2.1 - Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
2.2 - Place the cursor at a specified location.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The students will use one to one correspondence, recognize numerals and match numerals to sets 0-10.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, 
  • Kidspiration computer program 
  • 5 DAY ADVENTURE computer program.
  • Kidspiration Activities Number 1 and/or  Number 2 on the following website. http://www.clis.com/staffdev/Kids/KidsAct.htm
  • Computer
  • Presentation system

Pre Activities: 

  1. Recognize and name healthy foods.
  2. Name the days of the week.
  3. Student use of computer program 5 DAY ADVENTURE.
  4. “5 A Day Fun For Every Season" coloring book

Activities: 

  1. Teacher reads aloud The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
  2. Students recall days of the week from story.
  3. Students recall foods from the story.
  4. Students count aloud how many of each food.
  5. Students show “thumbs up” if the food is healthy, and students will show “thumbs down” if the food is not healthy.

Guided Practice:

  1. Students name the different parts of the computer as the teacher points to each physical component.
  2. Teacher asks students ways they can take care and use the computer. 
  3. Teacher shows students Kidspiration computer program on the television, demonstrates that they will be matching numerals to foods.
  4. Teacher demonstrates how to locate letters on the keyboard and how to use the shift key to make the first letter in their name capitalized.  students will be able to type their name correctly.
  5. Teacher explains to students they will take turns using the computer as the other students watch on the television or “whisper read” to each other The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
  6. Teacher talks about how students should respect for the work of others.

Independent Practice:

  1. Using the Kidspiration Number 1 Activity, students will manipulate the mouse to place the cursor on a numeral, and students will then drag the numeral to match the correct number of healthy foods in each box. Using Kidspiration Number 2 Activity, students will manipulate the mouse to place the cursor on a healthy food, then students will drag the amounts of healthy foods to match the number. 
  2. Students will type their name in a box before teacher prints hard copy to send home. 

Closure: Students go to printer to find their Kidspiration hard copy.

Assessment:  

  • Kidspiration hard copy is check for correct responses. 
  • Observe students matching food manipulatives to numeral pads in Math center during centers rotation using a check sheet. 
  • Students are observed as they point to the parts of the computer. 
  • Students names are checked to see if they type in their name correctly. (Spell the name correctly, and use the shift key to make their first letter upper case). 
  • Students will be observed demonstrating respect for the work of others.
