Curriculum Areas NC Standard Course of Study:

Computer/Technology Skills
Competency Goal 1:  The learner will understand important issues of a technology based society and will exhibit ethical behavior in the use of computer and other technologies
        Objective 1.1:  Identify the computer as a machine that helps people work and play.
        Objective 1.2:  Identify the physical components of the computer system
        Objective 1.3:  Demonstrate respect for the work of others
        Objective 1.4:  Demonstrate correct care and use of computers.
        Objective 1.5:  Identify word processing software as a tool for writing.
Competency Goal 2:  The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies
        Objective 2.1:   Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
        Objective 2.2:   Place the cursor at a specified location.
        Objective 2.3:  Identify items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.
Competency Goal 3:  The learner will use a variety of technologies to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate information.
         Objective 3.1 Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.
         Objective 3.2 Arrange a picture story in sequential/linear order.

Math
Competency Goal 3: The learner will model simple patterns and sorting activities.
        Objective 3.01: Describe likenesses and differences between and among objects.
        Objective 3.02: Sort by a given attribute; sort by own rule and explain.
        Objective  3.04: Create patterns with actions, words and objects.

Science
Competency Goal 1: The learner will build an understanding of similarities and differences in plants and animals.
       Objective 1.02: Identify the similarities and differences in animals:
                     Appearance.
                     Growth.
                     Change.
                     Purpose.
        Objective 1.03: Observe the different ways animals move from place to place, and how plants move in different ways.

English/Language Arts
Competency Goal 4: The learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual texts.
        Objective 4.01 Use new vocabulary in own speech and writing.
        Objective 4.03 Use words that describe color, size, and location in a variety of texts:
                                        e.g., oral retelling, written stories, lists, journal entries of personal
                                        experiences.
         Objective 4.04 Maintain conversation and discussions:  attending to oral presentations. Taking turns expressing ideas and asking questions.
 

Approximate Time Required:
    2 weeks

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
Student will learn to:

  1. Classify sea animals into groups based on certain attributes.
  2. Create a picture on ClarisWorks for Kids
  3. Write/wordprocess own name
  4. Copy words from immediate environment to label sea animal
Materials/Resources Needed:
  • Picture cards of various sea life
  • Various library books on sea life
  • Computer
  • ClarisWorks for Kids drawing program
  • Printer and paper


Pre Activities:
Class discusses and lists attributes for each sea animal family using. (examples: Invertebrates, Mammals, Fish, and Crustaceans)

Activities:

  1. Students learn about sea animal families.
  2. Students classify various sea animals
  3. Students divide into 4 teams.  Each team will be given a certain sea animal family.  Each child on that team will choose a sea animal from their family.
  4. Each child will draw a picture of the sea animal using ClarisWorks for Kids drawing program
  5. Each child, with assistance from the teacher, will save their picture
  6. Each child, with assistance from the teacher, transfer their picture to the slide show.
  7. Each child, with assistance from the teacher, will choose sound effects or music, and transition to next slide.
  8. Teams will present their sideshow to the class.
Assessment:
Observation, presentation rubric and finished sideshow.
