Our Favorite Pet

Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Math, Science, Language Arts

Brief Description: After teaching a unit on animals, we will tally each child's favorite animal. The choices will be DOG, CAT, FISH, AND BIRD. We will then enter data into a spreadsheet and watch the pre-made graph on the computer appear to correspond with the number the students entered for each animal.

Approximate time required: 30 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Technology
 
2.1- Locate and use letters, numbers and special keys on a keyboard.
2.2- Place the cursor at specified location.
2.3- Identify items by different attributes, using computer activities.
Language Arts:
1.04 Read or begin to read
Math:
1.01 Model numbers in a variety of ways.
1.02 Read, write and count using whole numbers; rote count forward to 30 or beyond and backward from 10.
1.03- Use 1-1 correspondence to identify how many (0-10)
1.07 Create and identify sets with more, less, or equal members by matching.
4.01 Collect data to create concrete and pictorial graphs and describe the results as a group activity.
Science: 
3.01 Describe objects in terms of their physical properties (type of animal)

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:  The teacher will make tally marks on the board to find out what the favorite class pet is. The data collected will be recorded in a prepared spreadsheet with bar graph on the computer. The bar graph will be displayed on the television for the whole class to see.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

Pre-activities: The students will have prior knowledge of the words Favorite Pet. The students will have prior knowledge of collecting data by using tally marks.

Activities:

  1. The students will each have a turn, telling the class his or her favorite pet. The choices are cat, dog, fish or bird.
  2. The teacher will record each child's favorite pet with a tally mark on the board beside the picture of that animal.

Guided Practice:

  1. Using the computer, the information from the tally will be recorded on a spreadsheet and bar graph. Students will view the spreadsheet on the class television.

Independent Practice: Student will tally the favorite animal of everyone in his or her math station and will record the information in the spreadsheet and watch the graph move up according to the data count.

Closure: The students will go to their journal and draw a picture of his or her favorite animal.

Assessment:

  • Observation:  Students can place the cursor in the correct cell beside the animal they enter data for. 
  • Check as mastered after spreadsheet and graph are printed:  Students correctly find the number on the keyboard and enter it in the spreadsheet. 
  • Check as mastered after spreadsheet and graph are printed:  Students counted tallies of their animal and entered data into the spreadsheet correctly. 
  • Check as mastered when teacher listens for response: Students correctly answer "how many" and "more, less, or equal" questions created by teacher.
