Brief Description: This lesson will incorporate the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar with a KIDSPIRATION activity on healthy snacks.
Approximate time required: 20 minutes
Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives
Technology
2.2 Student will place the cursor at a specific location.
2.1 - Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
Math
3.01 Student will describe likenesses and differences between and among objects.
3.02 Sort by a given attribute.
Health
5.2 Naming and categorizing foods
Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will be able to sort and classify healthy and non healthy snacks using the computer program KIDSPIRATION.
Materials/Resources Needed:
- THE VERY HUNGRY
CATERPILLAR, by Eric Carle
- classroom computer,
- Kidspiration software
- Kidspiration Healthy Snacks

- access to a color printer.
Pre Activities:
- Class discussion on healthy snacks
- Student use of computer program 5 DAY ADVENTURE.
- “5 A Day” Fun For Every Season coloring
book.
Activities:
- Read the book THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR by Eric Carle
- Discuss the kind of snacks the Hungry Caterpillar ate.
- Model use of Kidspiration
Healthy Snacks
- Involve learner by providing opportunity for each child to put a snack in the appropriate grocery cart.
- Students will type their name in a box before teacher prints hard copy to send
home.
Closure: Review healthy snacks. Assign the students the task of doing the activities on KIDSPIRATION- HEALTHY SNACKS.
Assessment:

Each student will complete the Kidspiration healthy snacks activity on the classroom computer. They will print
their activity on the color printer. The activity will be checked for mastery of the stated instructional objectives. Mastery will include having 3 out of 4 choices correct in each grocery basket.
- Students names are checked
to see if they type in their name correctly. (Spell the
name correctly, and use the shift key to make their first
letter upper case).
