Keyboarding in PE?

Content Area: Keyboard and PE

Goals and Objectives
PE:
Technology Competency Goal 2:
The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies.
Objective: 2.1 Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
Societal Issues Addressed in this lesson:  Keyboard utilization.

Materials Needed: A floor size mock keyboard big enough for the children to step on the keys, and flash cards.

Description of the Activity

  1.  The floor size keyboard was place on the gym floor so that all the students could see it clearly.
  2. A flash card was pulled and a student was picked to locate the number or letter on the keyboard.
  3. After they had their turn, they ran to the end of the gym to touch the same letter or number on the word wall and back to their place.
  4. Next, students were allowed to locate the first letter of their name.
  5. Additional questions were asked:
    • What key would you touch, if you wanted to go back or erase?
    • What key would you touch, if you wanted to change to upper case letters?
    • What key would you use, if you to make a sentence a question?
 Close class with a quick review of the keyboard.
