Brief Description:   This math lesson will cover counting, sorting and graphing.

Approximate time required:  30 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Math
1.01 Model numbers in a variety of ways. 
1.03 Use 1-1 correspondence to identify how many (0 - 10). 
3.02 Sort by a given attribute; sort by own rule and explain. 
3.04 Create patterns with actions, words and objects. 
Computer Technology Skills
2.2 Place the cursor at a specified location. (KU/WP/DTP) 
2.3 Identify items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software. (SS) 
3.1 Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or  software. 

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: 
The student will count, sort and graph M& Mís with 90% accuracy.  The student will use AppleWorks M&M graph created by the teacher to enter their M&M data and identify and group items according to different attributes.

Materials/Resources Needed: 
Computer
Printer with color ink
paper
1/4 cup of M & Ms (randomly placed the the cup) for each student.
Prepared M & M AppleWorks/ClairsWorks spreadsheet with graph.
Presentation System 

Pre Activities:
Students should know colors and numbers.
Have been introduced to graphs earlier in the year.

Activities:
Teacher gives directions as she models what Students are to count....sort.....graph.
Student count their M & Ms
Teacher asks student different ways to sort their M & Ms.
Students predict which color they will find most often.
Student and Teacher sort M & Ms by the side that has the M verse plain or primary colors vs. secondary colors or other attributes students may think of.
Student sort their M & Ms by color 
Students observe the movement of the graph (on a presentation system) as each student enters their information.
Teacher and students discuss what happens to the graph when information is entered. 
Students will observe which color they found most often in the cup as a class.
Students create a pattern using their M & Ms.

Closure:
Review the results of the activity and eat the M& Ms.

Assessment:
Observe that students can sort by colors
Observe students reading, writing, and counting  whole numbers as they enter the information into the spreadsheet.
Observe students placing the cursor at a specified location in the spreadsheet.
