Favorite Farm Animals

Brief Description: A study of farm
animals and their babies are completed by graphing your
favorite farm animal.
Standard Course of Study Goals
and Objectives:
Math:
1.01 Model numbers in a variety of ways.
1.02 Rote count forward and backward
1.03 - Use 1-1 correspondence to identify how many (0-10).
1.07 Create and identify sets with more, less, or equal members
by matching.
4.01 Collect data to create concrete and pictorial graphs.
English Language Arts
1.04 Read or begin to read.
Technology
2.1 Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a
keyboard.
2.2 Place the cursor at a specified location.
2.3 Identify items by different attributes using manipulatives
and/or software.
Teacher's Lesson
Goals/Objectives: The students will participate in the
completion of a bar graph showing their
favorite animal by typing the correct number beside each animal
name, and type his/her name.
Materials/Resources Needed:

Up
Close and Personal with Farm Animals video,
-
Spreadsheet with pre-made bar
graph,
-
TV monitor or projection
system
-
Tally board,
-
Computer,
-
Printer and paper
Pre Activities: The
students will need to recognize animal names and have developed
kindergarten computer skills.

Students will watch Farm
Animals video.
-
Teacher leads discussion of
the video.
-
Students are asked which
animal is their favorite as teacher shows a class tally or
whiteboard (choose top five favorite animals).
Guided Practice:
-
Teacher will tally responses
of students of their favorite farm animal on board.
-
Students will use the
computer to enter data for 5 farm animals and watch the
pre-constructed bar graph change.
Independent Practice:
-
Students will take the
completed Favorite Farm Animals bar graph sheet to a computer.
-
Using the AppleWorks
spreadsheet on the computer, students will read the animal
names.
-
Students will place the
cursor on column B next to each animal name and type the
correct number, watching the bar graph on the screen
-
The student will type his/her
name on line 7.

Students answer "how
many" and "more, less, or equal" (math
objective 1.03 and 1.07) questions created by teacher
-
Students will print the
completed bar graph.
Closure: Teacher reviews
the students' most favorite animal and states that the students
will make a puppet of their favorite animal the following day.
Assessment:
- Observation:
Students can place the cursor in the correct cell beside the
farm animal and enter the correct data.
- Check as mastered after
spreadsheet and graph are printed: Students
correctly find the number on the keyboard and enter it in
the spreadsheet.
- Check as mastered after
spreadsheet and graph are printed: Students
counted tallies of their favorite farm animal and entered
the correct number into the spreadsheet correctly.
- Check as mastered when
teacher listens for response: Students correctly answer
"how many" and "more,
less, or equal"
questions created by teacher.
