Subjects: Technology, Social Studies, and Language Arts

Description: This is an introductory lesson for students to perform a search on the Internet to research NC facts and symbols.

Time: 30-45 minutes

SCOS Goals and Objectives
Technology
2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data. 
3.2 Search and sort prepared databases for information to use in the classroom.
2.10 Use search strategies to locate information electronically.
Social Studies
12.1 Identify people, symbols, and events associated with North Carolina’s heritage.
Language Arts
3.06 Conduct research for assigned projects or self-selected projects from a variety of sources through the use of technological and informal tools. 
4.10 Use technology as a tool to gather, organize, and present information.

Teacher’s Goals and Objectives: Students will use the Internet to
search for information on North Carolina to answer questions on a 
worksheet be used in a future
research project.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

Pre-Activities: The students have observed how to conduct an Internet search and add a web site to the favorites menu.

Activities

  1. The students will log on to the Internet, then go to favorites.

  2. There they will choose http://www.50states.com. On this web site they will look up certain facts about NC and answer questions on a work sheet.

  3. We will look up the first two questions together, then the students will work independently.

Closure: The students will turn in a completed paper with questions about NC answered from the Internet. Students are asked to pick one NC fact or symbol to do a report on during a later class period.

Assessment: The students will be assessed by their performance in the computer lab and by their answers on the worksheet.
