Teacher's Lesson Goals/objectives:
The students should be able to:

  • listen to and read multiple versions of  "Cinderellaî.
  • identify major components of a "Cinderella" story.
  • create a database with the major components of multiple versions of "Cinderella" stories.

Materials/Resources Needed:

  1. Multiple versions of Cinderella stories. (See your Media Coordinator for  list)
  2. ClarisWorks (database)
  3. Videos (again see Media Coordinator)
  4.  Resource Book- Eight Cinderella's by Nancy Polette
Pre Activities:
  1. Students should have prior knowledge of keyboarding and word processing.
  2. Brainstorm about knowledge of fairy tales
  3. Create a web about fairy tales
  4. Brainstorm about the elements of  a "Cinderella" story
  5. Create a graphic organizer in order  to record  the elements of "Cinderella" stories.

Activities:

  1. Read orally Walt Disney's version of Cinderella.
  2. Students should listen and record specific elements onto their graphic organizer.
  3. Read or watch another version of Cinderella. Students should again listen and record data.
  4. Discuss their graphic organizer.  (easy to read, easy to reproduce)
  5. Introduce database
  6. Create a form for students to sue to create and record the elements or components of a "Cinderella" story.
  7. Students will now record data onto the new record sheet for database.
  8. Read/view other versions of "Cinderella"
  9. Students should continue to reared data daily.
  10. In computer lab, discuss the vocabulary of database

  16. Students can continue to record data with paper & pencil until computer time is available.
  17. Once all data has been entered in the database have students sort data.  I sorted according to: ABC order of Title, missing items, and countries.
  18. Next we displayed our information in list form and changed elements order in order to locate requested information together.
  19. Be sure to save information each time students add information.
Closure:
You have just created a database- a storage unit for your knowledge.
Can you think of something else that you could compose a database for?

Assessment:
