Teacher's Lesson Goals/objectives:
The students should be able to:
- listen to and read multiple versions of "Cinderellaî.
- identify major components of a "Cinderella" story.
- create a database with the major components of multiple
versions of "Cinderella" stories.
Materials/Resources Needed:
- Multiple versions of Cinderella stories. (See your Media
Coordinator for list)
- ClarisWorks (database)
- Videos (again see Media Coordinator)
- Resource Book- Eight Cinderella's by Nancy Polette
Pre Activities:
- Students should have prior knowledge of keyboarding and word
processing.
- Brainstorm about knowledge of fairy tales
- Create a web about fairy tales
- Brainstorm about the elements of a
"Cinderella" story
- Create a graphic organizer in order to record the
elements of "Cinderella" stories.
Activities:
- Read orally Walt Disney's version of Cinderella.
- Students should listen and record specific elements onto their
graphic organizer.
- Read or watch another version of Cinderella. Students should
again listen and record data.
- Discuss their graphic organizer. (easy to read, easy to
reproduce)
- Introduce database
- Create a form for students to sue to create and record the
elements or components of a "Cinderella" story.
- Students will now record data onto the new record sheet for
database.
- Read/view other versions of "Cinderella"
- Students should continue to reared data daily.
- In computer lab, discuss the vocabulary of database
- Show database in ClarisWorks
- Together set up your fields. (I used these fields: Title,
Author, Main Character, Villains, Missing item, godmother,
main event and ending) Be sure to discuss size, color, and
fonts.
- Together record the first story into the database.
- Show how to make other records.
- After the computer lab session continue to read/view
"Cinderella's" stories and record data.
- Students can continue to record data with paper & pencil
until computer time is available.
- Once all data has been entered in the database have students
sort data. I sorted according to: ABC order of Title,
missing items, and countries.
- Next we displayed our information in list form and changed
elements order in order to locate requested information
together.
- Be sure to save information each time students add
information.
Closure:
You have just created a database- a storage unit for your
knowledge.
Can you think of something else that you could compose a
database for?
Assessment:
- Computer generated database
- Project based: rubric
Observation: Students knowledge of the database program.
Students records of "Cinderella" stories
Observation: This lesson has been observed by a
computer lab personnel
Note: This is only one part of my "Cinderella"
project.
