Publishing a Narrative....Our Trip to Raleigh

Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: English Language Arts and
Technology 

Brief Description: Following the annual 4th grade field trip to Raleigh, the students will complete a planning page [graphic organizer}. The student will use this page to type, save and print their personal narrative about the trip. The printed copies will be put in a class booklet titled "Our Trip to Raleigh". 

Approximate time required: three periods in the computer lab

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives: Technology:
1.1 Identify the ways in which technology has changed the lives of people in North Carolina.
2.2 Practice proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters. 
2.3 Recognize word processing terms and functions.
2.4 Edit a word processing file to make indicated corrections.
3.1 Create, format, save, and print a word processed document.

English/Language Arts:
1.05 Use word reference materials (e.g., glossary, dictionary, thesaurus) to identify and comprehend unknown words.
3.05 Integrate information from two or more sources to expand understanding of text.
4.05 Use planning strategies to generate topics and organize ideas (e.g., brainstorming, mapping, webbing, reading, discussion).
4.06 Compose a draft that conveys major ideas and maintains focus on the topic with specific, relevant, supporting details by using preliminary plans.
4.08 Focus revision on a specific element
4.10 Use technology as a tool to gather, organize, and present information.
5.01 Use correct capitalization (e.g., names of languages, nationalities, musical compositions) and punctuation (e.g., commas in a series, commas in direct address, commas and quotation marks in dialogue, apostrophes in possessives).
5.03 Elaborate information and ideas in writing.
5.04 Compose multiple paragraphs.
5.06 Proofread and correct most misspellings independently with reference to resources (e.g., dictionaries, thesauri, glossaries, computer spell-checks, and other classroom sources).
5.07 Use established criteria to edit for language conventions and format.
5.09 Create readable documents through legible handwriting and/or word processing.

Social Studies:

7.1 Identify important services provided by state government in North Carolina. 
11.1 Identify and describe changes which have occurred in ways of living in North Carolina.


Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will create, type, save, and print a personal narrative essay. 

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • white board and markers for teacher, 
  • pencils, 
  • paper, and 
  • computers for students

Pre Activities

  1. Teacher reviews criteria for writing narrative essays.
  2. Students divide planning page into thirds and write ideas for beginning, middle, and end of story. 
  3. Students use writing process when creating their narrative essays. 
  4. Teacher reminds students to practice proper keyboarding techniques and reviews word processing terms and functions.
  5. Class discusses how technology has changed the lives of people in NC. 

Activities: 

  1. Student will bring their planning pages with them to the computer lab.
  2. Students will click on AppleWorks in the student setup screen.
  3. Students will click on word processing.
  4. Students will click on new document.
  5. I will then instruct them to choose double spacing, with the Font Helvetica, in 14 point letters.
  6. I will remind them to indent at the beginning of each paragraph.
  7. The teacher assistant, foster grandparent, and I will rotate around the lab assisting students and monitoring for correct keyboarding skills.
  8. At the end of the period, I will instruct students how to save their document under their name and TRLP. {example: Joshua TRLP}
  9. The next day, I will instruct students, to open the saved document and complete their essays.
  10. Once the essay is completed, I will show them how to choose print. (Teacher will edit documents). 
  11. In the classroom, the teacher reviews editing symbols and models how  to correct errors on a computer.  
  12. The next time students go to the computer lab, they  will retrieve their document,  edit their work and print a final copy. 

Closure: Ask students to identify the ways in which technology has changed how authors publish work in NC.

Assessment

  1. Observation of the students using computer skills: proper keyboarding techniques, retrieving, saving, printing
  2. Rubric for 4th grade narrative writing used for completed essays.
