Research North Carolina Symbols for a North Carolina Symbols Scrapbook

Subject Areas:  Social Studies, Computer, Language Arts

Brief Description: The teacher will orally discuss  the different symbols representing North Carolina before taking the Raleigh Field Trip with students. The teacher will ask students to name as many North Carolina Symbols that they already know. The teacher will have students research in their North Carolina Social Studies textbook different NC Symbols. In the computer lab each student will choose one symbol to research for the scrapbook. The students will print a symbol and write a brief description for that symbol. The completed work will be placed in a North Carolina Symbol Scrapbook.

Approximate time required: 2 computer lab sessions and two 40-minute class periods

N.C. Goals and Objectives:
Social Studies
12.1 Identify people, symbols, and events associated with North Carolina's heritage.
Technology 
1.1 Identify the ways in which technology has changed the lives of people in North Carolina.
1.3 Identify violations of the Copyright Law.
2.2 Practice proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters.
2.4 Edit a word processing file to make indicated corrections.
2.10 Use search strategies to locate information electronically.
3.1 Create, format, save, and print a word processed document.
English/Language Arts 
2.07 Determine usefulness of information and ideas consistent with purpose.
3.06 Conduct research for assigned projects or self-selected projects (with assistance) from a variety of sources through the use of technological and informal tools (e.g., print and non-print texts, artifacts, people, libraries, databases, computer networks).
4.03 Make oral and written presentations using visual aide with an awareness of purpose and audience.
4.10 Use technology as a tool to gather, organize, and present information.
5.09 Create readable documents through legible handwriting and/or word processing.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives

  1. The students will discuss the different symbols representing North Carolina.
  2. The students will search on the suggested sites for information on NC Symbols.
  3. The students will locate their chosen symbol and print.
  4. The students will use word processing program to enter a description of their symbol.
  5. The students will edit and revise their description using the appropriate tools.
  6. The students will enter their finished product in a NC Scrapbook for NC symbols.

Materials:

  • Computer lab, 
  • Smartboard and projection system 
  • Prior Social Studies coverage of North Carolina symbols from Social Studies textbook, 
  • appropriate site engines and web sites

Pre Activities:

Classroom coverage of Social Studies study on NC Symbols. Class discussions with media coordinator on the copyright law and Fair Use. 

Guided Practice:

  1. Use Smart board and projection system  to demonstrate how to use a search engine.
  2. Teacher reviews Fair Use for Students and Copyright information. 
  3. Model how to locate and implement information from a designated site.

Activities:

  1. Discuss ways in which technology has changed the lives of people in NC. (How did we learn about NC before computers and the Internet? How has learning changed with computers and Internet?)
  2. Students will access the appropriate web-search site by going to favorites and selecting NC Web Resources.
  3. They will search and find the given NC Symbol.
  4. They will read the information and then take notes in their own words about the chosen symbol.
  5. They will copy the symbol into a word processing document.
  6. With their tools selected, they will paste the symbol onto the document.
  7. Using their notes they will type a brief description about the symbol.
  8. They will save, edit, and print the description along with the symbol.

Closure: Students will share the information orally and add printed pages to a North Carolina Scrap Book

12 out of 16 = B

10 out of 16 = C

Assessment for pages printed: (Before entering into a scrap book)

Information must be in complete sentences. Spelling must be correct. The

information about each symbol must follow copyright law.

Oral Assessment of the project: The children will discuss ways in which

technology has changed the lives of people in North Carolina.
