Invitation-

A child's view of our Northern Neighbors

Tasks-

This unit will allow students to research a province in Canada in order to compare and contrast Canada to our country, United States. They will be researching in the areas of: government, geographical features, landmarks, and major cities.  Students will create a HyperStudio production to display their findings.
Interactions-
Students will conduct their own research but will be group together according to Province researched for their presentation.

Situations-

The learning environments will consist of the classroom, Media Center, and Computer Lab.  The research should complete in one week with each day devoting one to one-half hours.  One week with again one to one-half hours spent on the HyperStudio presentation.

Tools- 

Students will have access to numerous print and non-print materials.  The Media Center has various videos as well as many research books.  The Computer Lab will allow students access to the Internet.  Computer Lab will also have the HyperStudio program.

Standards-

NCSCOS objectives are as followed:

Social Studies:
Competency Goal 1: The learner will analyze the characteristics of the people of North Carolina.
1.1 Identify, locate, and describe ways of living of the major Native-American groups in North Carolina, past and     present. 
1.3 Analyze similarities and differences among North Carolina's people, past and present. 
Competency Goal 3:  The learner will locate major physical features and suggest the influence of location on life in North Carolina.
3.1  Describe the absolute and relative location of the state and places within the state.
3.2  Locate in absolute and relative terms major landforms, bodies of water, and natural resources in North Carolina.
Competency Goal 4: The learner will assess the significance of physical and cultural characteristics of regions within North Carolina and the regions of which North Carolina is a part.
4.2 Describe the major physical and cultural characteristics of regions within North Carolina. 
Competency Goal 7: The learner will analyze the effectiveness of government agencies and political institutions in North Carolina.
7.2 Explain how state government services are financed. 

Computer/Technology Skills
    Goal 2:  The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in using computer technology.
        Objective:  2.1  Use technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
 


Assessment: 

Students' presentations will be assessed using a rubric evaluating the completeness of the project.
