Hyped Up Over North Carolina Symbols

Brief Description: This lesson is designed for students to obtain knowledge of  North Carolina symbols and create a multimedia presentation to be presented to the class.

Approximate time required:  5 days @ 45 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Social Studies
:  
12.1 Identify people, symbols, and events associated with North Carolina's heritage.
Technology:  
2.1 Use technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.4 Create a multimedia project and cite sources of copyrighted material.
               
Reading:  
Organize, summarize, and paraphrase information.
Writing:  
Create a published document using word processing.

Teacher Objective:  Students will research information about the North Carolina symbols and write 2 or 3 sentences in their own words about that symbol.  They will locate a picture that represents that symbol.  Then they will create a HyperStudio card with the information they found and scan a picture.  The cards will then be collaborated together and presented to the class.         

Materials/Resources Needed:  

Pre-Activities:  (1)  

  1. The teacher will teach a lesson on symbols of North Carolina.   

  2. Each child will draw from a hat the symbol they are to research.  

Activities:  

  1. Students will begin researching their symbols through the various resources listed above. They will then determine the name of the symbol, the year the General Assembly made it a symbol for North Carolina and if any the reason why it became the state symbol.  

  2. In their own words they will write their 2-3 sentences on an index card.  

  3. They will work together on checking for errors on each others cards.  

  4. Students will locate a graphic that goes along with their symbol and scan that picture.  

  5. The teacher will demonstrate how to create HyperStudio card by initializing the stack with the introduction card.  

  6. Students will work on the background of their card, as well as placing a button and using animation to go on to the next card.  

  7. After card is created then students will add text and graphics.

  8. The teacher will then compile all cards into one stack.   

Note:  During the daily lessons I will be looking for the following:

  1. use of resources

  2. using on words to create text

  3. working together to edit text

  4. listening to directions of HyperStudio creation  

Closure:  The finale of this project will be when the HyperStudio slide presentation is watched by the class.

Assessment: 

  • Card was complete with color, text, and graphic (Tech.3.4)

  • All buttons and animation worked correctly. (Tech.3.4)

  • Students needed little or no help creating their card. (Tech.3.4)

  • Cards included the name of the symbol, the year the General Assembly made it a symbol for North Carolina and if any, the reason why it became the state symbol.  (SS 12.1)

  • Students cited copyrighted sources appropriately. (Tech.3.4)

  • Students were able to identify 10 symbols associated with NC heritage.  (SS 12.1)

  • Organized, summarized, and paraphrased information about their symbols on their card.  (reading)

Hyped Up Over North Carolina Symbols project will be assessed using a rubric.
