communicate information.
Objective 3.3 Create a
table/graph from spreadsheet data.
Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives
- Students will understand the basics of a spreadsheet
- Students will become familiar with spreadsheet terms
- Students will be able to use the data gathered to make a pie
graph
- Students will use clip art to decorated their graph.
- Students will print the final product.
Materials
- Mini bag of Skittles (one per child)
- Paper and pencil
- Computer
- ClarisWorks spreadsheet program and clip art
- Printer
Pre Activities
Students have prior knowledge of creating
spreadsheets and graphs on the computer.
Students have prior knowledge of inserting clip art in to documents.
Activities
- Students open their pack of Skittles
- Each student will tally how many of each color of Skittles
they have.
- Students will open the ClairsWorks application and click on
Spreadsheet.
- Each student will insert a header into their spreadsheet then
type in the name.
- Type in the title "What Flavor Are Your Skittles"
in cell A1
- Starting in cell A2 each student will insert the data the
collected into the cells of the spreadsheet. Starting with
the flavors in column A and how many of each in column B.
- Next highlight cells A1 through B6 that have their
information.
- Go to Options (located on the menu bar) and choose Make
Chart.
- Choose Pie Chart and click on OK
- Double click on the pie graph to return to the Chart
Options.
- Click on Series and then click on Label Data and
choose % in slice. (The graph will then appear showing
the flavors and their %).
- Students may then put some appropriate clip art around their
graph.
- Students should move the graph so both their spreadsheet data
and the graph will show when it is printed.
- Students print their graphs.
Assessment
Each student's graph will be graded on:
- Successfully completion of the graph without assistance
- Directions were followed exactly and both spreadsheet and
completed pie graph with % are shown.
- Spreadsheet information is accurate
- Clip art used and is appropriate for the pie chart
