Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Geometry, ESL and Technology

Brief Description: Two of my students, C. Ruffin and G. Garcia, actually helped come up with the idea for our technology rich activity. Using pattern blocks they constructed a house and the landscaping around it. Alas, the idea was created for our computer lesson and shown to the class. The students used the drawing tools in AppleWorks to create a picture of a house complete with landscaping around it using geometric plane figures and angles. A list of geometric plane figures, angles, and lines was put on the board that they needed to incorporate into their picture. They also used the painting tools to add color to their drawing. Each shape had a designated color that they were required to use on that figure. Their pictures were printed and displayed on the bulletin board. This was a great bilingual activity to teach geometric figures!

Approximate time required: Two 45 minute classes!

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives
Math
2.01- Identify points, lines, and angles ( intersecting, right, acute, perpendicular and obtuse); identify in the environment.
2.03-Use manipulative, pictorial representations, and appropriate vocabulary to identify properties of plane figures in the environment.

Technology
2..1- Use technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.1 Create, format, save, and print a word processed document.
Second Language
3.01 Name and describe orally people, places, and things using everyday words and phrases.
5.07 Identify similarities and differences of tangible products (e.g., toys, sport equipment, food) of the target cultures and his/her own culture(s).

Materials/Resources Needed:

  • Drawing tools found in AppleWorks.

  • Smartboard to demonstrate how each tool could be used to create their picture.

  • Projection system

  • Computer

  • Printer

Pre Activities: Before you start:

  1. Make sure that the kids have an understanding of the following figures: octagon, pentagon, triangle, quadrilateral,. square, circle, and rectangles.

  2. Make sure they can draw an acute, obtuse, right , and intersecting angle.

  3. Students need to be able to draw a line, ray, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and intersecting lines correctly.

Activities

  1. First I gave a demonstration using The Smart Board of how the AppleWorks drawing tools could be used.

  2. Next we reviewed the list of plane figures, angles and lines that we wanted to include in our lesson.

  3. Students created, formatted, saved their  processed document.

  4. During the second class lesson students retrieved their document added the color to our picture continuing to use the AppleWorks tools.

  5. Teacher reviews the use of the tools on the Smart Board.

  6. At the end of the lesson we printed our pictures.

  7. Computer generated drawings are displayed on the bulletin board  in the hallway of our school.

Closure: I displayed the pictures the students had created, and we discussed the creative use of their placement of the plane figures, angles, and lines.

Assessment
The students used a check off sheet to make sure that they had included each object required. They received ten points for each of the ten items on their checklist.
