Subjects Included in this lesson:  Technology, Social Studies and English/Language Arts

Brief Description:  This is an introductory lesson designed to teach the children how to use the Internet to research famous North Carolinians.

Approximate time Required:  30-40 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Technology:
1.1 Identify the ways in which technology has changed the lives of people in North Carolina.
1.3 Identify violations of Copyright Law.
2.1 Use technology tools used to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.2 Search and sort prepared databases for information to use in classroom projects.
2.10 Use search strategies to locate information electronically.
3.5 Evaluate information found via telecommunications for content and usefulness.

Social Studies:
12.1 – Identify people, symbols, and events associated with North Carolina’s heritage.
English/Language Arts:
3.06 – Conduct research for assigned projects or self-selected projects from a variety of sources through the use of technological and informal tools.
4.10 Use technology as a tool to gather, organize, and present information.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
The student will use the Internet to search for information on a specific famous North Carolinian in order to understand how to use the Internet to search for information on a famous North Carolinian of their choice in a future research project.

MATERIALS/RESOURCES NEEDED: Computer with Internet access to http://www.50states.com

Pre-Activities:

  1. The students add the above-mentioned web site under the favorite menu on their computers in the computer lab. 

  2. Students use a rubric to evaluate information found via telecommunications for content and usefulness.  Rubric for Evaluating Web Pages for Primary Grades: http://www.siec.k12.in.us/~west/edu/rubric1.htm

Activities:
Use this web site to answer specific questions about Andrew Johnson.

Guided Practice:

  1. Guide the children to the Website’s home page.  

  2. Have them double click on North Carolina 

  3. Scroll down to Biographies: Famous North Carolinians

  4. Instruct them to correctly type in the name, Andrew Johnson 

  5. Students are to  choose the Biography of Andrew Johnson

  6. Then help them use this Web site to answer the first two questions from the worksheet together. 

  7. Point out that all answers should be written in the student’s own words and not copied word for word as this is a violation of the Copyright Law.

Note:   If a child struggles to answer the questions, extra time will be spent with that child before the final research project is due. 

Question 13:  Teacher can use this as a brainstorming activity.

Independent Practice:
Allow the students sufficient time to search for the answers to the questions asked about this person.  Assist any students who need help.

Closure:
After all of the students have answered the questions about Andrew Jackson, explain that they will be required to use this Internet address in the same manner to answer questions about their assigned famous North Carolinian.

Assessment:

  1. Each child will have the answers to the questions graded for completion and correctness. 

  2. Students will be assessed on search strategies by observation.

  3. Students will be assessed on Copyright violations by observation.
