Brief Description: 
After listening to The Rainbow Fish, the students will write a story using their own experiences with friends.  The students will use a word processing program, ClarisWorks.  The students will use examples of BOLD, italics, and underlining in their stories. The students will use spell check.

Approximate Time:   Four class periods
One period for teacher to read the story and the students to brainstorm ideas.
One period for students to write and  edit their story.
One period in the computer lab for the students to rewrite their stories.
One period for students to share their stories.

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:

English Language Arts (Communication Skills)
Goal 1:  The learner will use strategies and processes that enhance control of communication skills development.
Objective 1.1: The learner will apply PREPARATION strategies to comprehend or convey experiences and information.
Objective 1.2:   The learner will apply ENGAGEMENT strategies to comprehend or convey experiences and information.
Objective 1.3: The learner will apply RESPONSE strategies to comprehend or convey experiences and information.

Goal 2:  The learner will use language for the acquisition, interpretation, and application of information. 
Objective 2.1: The learner will identify, collect, or select information and ideas.
Objective 2.2: The learner will analyze, synthesize, and organize information and discover related ideas, concepts, or generalizations.
Objective 2.3: The learner will apply, extend, and expand on information and concepts.

Goal 3:  The learner will use language for critical analysis and evaluation.

Objective 3.3 The learner will develop criteria and evaluate the quality, reliance, and importance of the information and ideas.
Goal 4:  The learner will use language for aesthetic and personal response.
Objective 4.1: The learner will respond to personal situations and events in selections and to personal situations and events.
Objective 4.2:  The learner will respond to the personal, social, cultural, and historical significance of selections or personal experiences.
Objective 4.3: The learner will respond critically and creatively to selections or personal experiences.

Writing Grade 1:  Benchmarks of Proficiency
Characteristics of the writer:  Possess the attitudes, habits, and dispositions of a writer.

Chooses writing for publishing and shares writing voluntarily.
Composing process:  Using one or more of the following strategies to write literary, informational, and practical texts.
 Uses vocabulary of print such as letter, word, and questions mark.
 Uses invented spelling 
 Uses a prewriting activity such as drawing, brainstorming, or     story boarding with teacher support.
 Revises individual or group writing by adding on in response to     questions.
 Uses upper and lower case letters appropriately.
 Innovates on a narrative, poem, or informational texts.
 Writes legibly with recognizable words.
 Uses words from...immediate environment.
 Puts words together in a sentence format and writes multiple     sentences on a topic.
 Spells some high frequency words correctly.
Composing products:  Writes literary, information, and practical texts to convey meaning, to learn, and to clarify thinking.
 

Information Skills
Goal 1:   The learner will explore sources and formats for reading, listening, and viewing purposes.
Objective 1.01:  Participate in read aloud, storytelling, book talking, silent and voluntary reading experiences.
Objective 1.04:  Acknowledge ownership of ideas.
Objective 1.05:  Demonstrate sense of story (e.g., beginning, middle, end, characters, details).

Goal 2: The learner will identify and use criteria for excellence to evaluate information and formats.
Objective 2.04:  Develop and communicate personal criteria for selecting resources for information needs and enjoyment.
Objective 2.05:  Recognize the power of media to influence.

Goal 5:   The learner will communicate reading, listening, and viewing experiences.
Objective 5.01:  Respond to reading, listening, viewing experiences orally, artistically, dramatically, through various formats.
Objective 5.02:  Produce media in various formats.

Technology
Goal 1:   The learner will understand important issues of a technology based society and will exhibit ethical behavior in the use of computer and other technologies.
Objective 1.1:  Identify uses of technology at home and at school.
Objective 1.3:  Identify physical components of a computer system.

Goal 2: The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies.
Objective 2.2:  Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.

Goal 3: The learner will use a variety of technologies to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate information.
Objective 3.2:  Gather, organize, and display data.
Using technology at home and at school.
Using word processing
 

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
The behavioral objective:  After listening to the book, The Rainbow Fish, the students will write a story using their own experiences with friends.  After discussing and editing their story with the teacher, the students will rewrite their story on the computer using a word processing program, ClarisWorks.  The students will use examples of BOLD, italics, and underlining in their stories.

The student will:

  1. listen to The Rainbow Fish
  2. engage in brainstorming key ideas from the story.
  3. write a personal story about a friend.
  4. participate in a discussion with the teacher about proper spelling and grammar while editing their story.
  5. use the word processing program, ClarisWorks, to rewrite their story.
  6. use capital letters as needed.
  7. use correct punctuation.
  8. center the title.
  9. type the title in bold style.
  10. write their name in italics style.
  11. indent the beginning of each paragraph.
  12. underline the title of the book , The Rainbow Fish.
  13. choose the font and the size of the font to use in their story.
  14. print their story to share with the class.


Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Paper
  • The book: The Rainbow Fish
Pre Activities: 
The teacher will conduct a lesson on how to use ClarisWorks.
The students will:
  1. practice highlighting text to use different styles, e.g., bold, italics, and underlining.
  2. know how to assimilate ideas to write a story.
  3. know how to access ClarisWorks.
  4. know how to print a document.
  5. be familiar with the parts of a computer, e.g. keyboard, monitor, and mouse.


Activities:
The teacher will :

  1. introduce the book, The Rainbow Fish.
  2. read the book, The Rainbow Fish.
The  students will:
  1. listen to the book,  The Rainbow Fish.
  2. brainstorm ideas in order to write a story about their friends.
  3. write a story.
  4. edit the story with help from the teacher.
  5. rewrite their story using ClarisWorks.
  6. center the title of their story.
  7. indent the first word in each paragraph.
  8. underline the title of The Rainbow Fish.
  9. use italics when referring to themselves or their friends.
  10. go under Edit, Writing Tools, and Check Document Spelling to spell check their document.
  11. print their story.
  12. share their story with the class.
Closure:
The student will share their story with the class and compare their stories to The Rainbow Fish.

Assessment: 
Assessment will be by observations and one-on-one conferencing.
The teacher will look for understanding of:

  1. concepts covered in the story, i.e., friendship, sharing, caring. 
  2. use of technology as a learning tool.
  3. the writing process, i.e., capitalization and punctuation.
  4. the concept of stories, i.e., beginning, middle and ending.
  5. the need to listen and compare to prior knowledge.
