Graphing Our Favorite Candy Bars

Brief Description:   Using ClarisWorks for Kids, students will graph the class' favorite candy bars using a bar graph.

Approximate time required: 45 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives: 
Math 
4.01 Gather, organize and display information as a group activity. 
4.02 Answer questions about charts and graphs. 
4.03 Make predictions based on experiences. 
4.04 Create concrete, pictorial, and symbolic graphs using prepared grids.
Technology 
2.2 Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
2.3 Identify basic word processing terms. 
2.4 Key words and/or sentences using word processing. 
3.1 Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.
3.2 Gather, organize, and display data.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will create a bar graph, using ClarisWorks for Kids:  Graphing Pad, of the class' favorite candy bar.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • ClarisWorks for Kids
  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Software -ClarisWorks for Kids, Graphing Club, or AppleWorks spreadsheet
  • Instructions for graphing
Pre Activities: 
1.  As a whole group activity, the students will be surveyed to decide their favorite candy bars. 
2.  The students will tally the results.
3.   Students will ask and answer questions about charts and graphs. 
4.  Make predictions based on experiences.
5.  The students will make a class bar graph on the board.
6.  Tallies are recorded for the computer lab.

Activities: 
1.  The teacher will model on the computer, how to create the bar graph.
2.  Students are given a sheet of step-by-step instructions (See instructions below).
3.  Students will click on "ClarisWorks for Kids".
4.  Students will choose "Graphing Pad".
5.  Students will choose "Bar Graph".
6.  Students will choose the title and type a title.
7.  Students will choose the topic head and type "candy bars".
8.  Students will change each of the items  to the various candy bars.
9.  Students will change "measurement"  to "students".
10.  Students will change each number beside the items to the class' tallies.
11.  In the box, under "notes", students will type about their bar graph, adding their names here.  As an enrichment, students may change font, size, and color.

Closure:  Students will print their graphs.  As a class, discuss the graphing results.

Assessment:  The printed graph, as well as the teacher's observation during the process, will be the assessment of the child's understanding of the project.  Did the student correctly change each of the categories when creating the graph.

Instructions for Graphing Our Favorite Candy Bars
1.  Open  the software program called, "ClarisWorks for Kids"
2.  Choose "Graphing Pad"
3.  Choose "Bar Graph"
4.  Change the "title" to "Our Favorite Candy Bars"
5.  Change the "topic head" to ìCandy Barî.  Then press "return'.
6.  Item 1:  change to "Hershey's".  Then press "return
7.  Item 2:  change to "Snickers".  Then press "return
8.  Item 3:  change to "3 Musketeers".  Then press "return
9.  Item 4:  change to "Crunch".  Then press "return
10.  Item 5:  change to "Kit Kat".  Then press "return
11.  Change "measurement" to "Students".  Then change each number beside the candy bars. 
            Hershey's:  3
            Snickers:  5
            3 Musketeers:  6
            Crunch:  3
            Kit Kat:  5
12.  Under notes:  highlight and "delete".  Change the size. Type about our graph and put your name here.  For example:
This is a graph that our class made about our favorite candy bar.
13.  Go to File... Choose Print
