Brief Description: 
The students will word process imaginative stories about rabbits that will be made into individual booklets that the students will take home by Easter vacation.

Approximate time required: 
2 1/2 hours per child each week over a 4 week period before Easter.
 

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Creative Writing 
4.01 Select and use new vocabulary and language structures in both speech and writing context (e.g., oral retelling using exclamatory phrases to accent an idea or event).
4.02 Use words that name characters and settings (who, where) and words that tell action and events (what happened, what did ____do) in simple texts.
4.03 Use specific words to name and tell action in oral and written language (e.g., using words such as frog and toad when discussing an expository text).
4.04 Extend skills in using oral written language: producing written products.
5.02 Apply phonics to write independently, using temporary and/or conventional spelling.
5.03 Write all upper and lower case letters of the alphabet, using correct letter formation.
5.04 Use complete sentences to write simple texts.
5.05 Use basic capitalization and punctuation:

  • first word in a sentence.
  • proper names.
  • period to end declarative sentence.
  • question mark to end interrogative sentence.
5.06 Self monitor composition by using one or two strategies (e.g., rereading, peer conferences).
Computer/Technology
1.2 Discuss ownership of computer created work. 
1.3 Identify physical components of a computer system.
2.2 Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
2.3 Identify basic word processing terms. 
2.4 Key words and/or sentences using word processing.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: 
Each student will word process, save a story on an individual disk, learn how to select font and size of text for their story and retrieve their document. After word processing, they will print, share, and display their story in the classroom.

Materials/Resources Needed:
Computer
Printer
Paper
Word Processing Program
Format  called The Strange Adventure for students to compose stories on
Suggested books: 

  • Beatrix Potter's, Tales of Peter Rabbit
  • Carolyn Bailey's The Little Rabbit who Wanted Red Wings
  • Amye Rosenberg's, Rabbit's Rainy Day
  • Thornton W. Burgess', How Peter Cottontail got his Name
  • Bonnie Worth's, Peter Cottontail's Surprise


Pre Activities:

  1. Before Easter, the class has acquired factual knowledge about rabbits.
  2. Students read fun stories about rabbits.


Activities: 3 weeks before Easter

  1. Students are given a The Strange Adventure format to compose their story on.
  2. Students imagine they are the Easter Bunny delivering Easter eggs. While delivering the eggs, they have a strange adventure.
  3. Throughout the week, students are conferenced about their stories.
  4. Class discusses ownership of computer created work.
  5. Students word process a story.
  6. A class schedule is established for writing time (see sample schedule below)
Independent Practice:
Throughout a three week period, children will independently open their document as needed to complete the word processing of their story.  They will select the needed printer commands to print their stories.

Closure:
A copy of all the stories that have been word processed will be compiled in a booklet for each child to take home and enjoy reading over Easter vacation as a first grade keepsake. 

Assessment: 

  1. Each student's writing will be assessed by a writing rubric. 
  2. Students will be observed to see if they can locate and use letters, numbers and special keys on a keyboard, as well as, knowledge of physical components of a computer: mouse, monitor, and keyboard.
  3. Students work will be checked for ownership (other's story ideas have not  replicated).
  4. Students will  be asked to save/save as, print, open, to check for knowledge of basic word processing terms.
