Subjects Included: Reading and Technology

Description: Students will learn how to access our school website and individual teacher websites.

SCOS Goals and Objectives:
Reading
2.02 Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of texts.
Technology
1.1 Identify uses of technology at home and at school. 
1.4 Identify the Internet as a source of information. 
2.1 Identify and discuss fundamental computer terms. 

Materials Needed: 

  • Computers 

  • Internet access

  • Teacher's web address

Pre-Activities: 

  1. Discuss and share how students have or have seen the computer being used as a source of information. 

  2. Review fundamental computer terms.

Activities

  1. Each child will access the Internet on their computer and use the BES school website to gather information about the school. 

  2. Click on Internet Explorer

  3. Look at the BES site page and the many things you can find out on this page.

    Question things such as 

    1. Where would you click to find out when we start school next year? (BES calendar 2003-2004)

    2. Who won the quiz bowl held at BES?

    3. What will the weather in Beaufort be like today?, etc.

  4. After looking at the cover page, show the students how to access our own classroom web page. Let them find the homework assignment and any announcements. Ask:  How would the teacher's web page be helpful at home?

  5. Allow some exploration of other teacher web sites or the BES site if time allows.

Closure: Allow the students to print their own calendar for the 2003-2004 school year to take home.

Assessment: Observation of students on the computers and web sites, and student answers to questions concerning web site information.
