Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Language Arts, Technology

Brief Description:   
The children will engage in an interactive writing activity based on the story Fortunately, by Remy Charlip. The product will be published as a slide show presentation.

Approximate time required: 30 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals:
Technology
2.5 Participate in the creation of a class multimedia linear story.
Language Arts:
2.04 Use preparation strategies to anticipate vocabulary of a text and to connect prior knowledge and experiences to a new text.
2.05 Predict and explain what will happen next in stories.
3.02 Recognize and relate similar vocabulary use and concepts across experiences with texts.
4.03 Use specific words to name and tell action in oral and written language.
4.05 Write and /or participate in writing by using an author’s model of language and extending the model.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • Fortunately, by Remy Charlip, 

  • Appleworks (slide show application),

  • Apple Presentation System for classroom television, 

  • pocket chart, 

  • sentence strips

Pre Activities: 
Familiarize students with the story Fortunately, by Remy Charlip

Activities:
1. Read the story as a class activity.
2.Brainstorm ideas to use the same format, but compose a new story that is original to the class.
3. Write the new story using the interactive method of composition.
4. Publish the story in a slide show presentation using the AppleWorks application.
5. Print and copy the product as a new book for each child to illustrate and take home to read and share with parents.

Closure
Review the slide show presentation as a class.

Assessment
This activity will be assessed by reviewing the final product. We will have created a slide show presentation and each student will receive a printed copy to assemble into individual books that they can keep.
