Naughty or Nice?

A fun Christmas activity in which students use the computer to generate a Christmas list and the Internet to communicate with Santa.

Approximate time required: 30 minutes (depends on size of group and number of computers available) 

Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: 
Social Studies, Language Arts, and Technology

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:  

English/Language Arts:

3.01 Elaborate on how events connect to life experiences.
4.06 Compose a variety of products.

Social Studies:

7.2 Participate in classroom activities associated with special holidays.  

Computer/Technology: 

1.1 Identify uses of technology at home and school.
1.3 Identify physical components of a computer system
1.4 Identify the Internet as a source of information. 
2.1 Identify and discuss fundamental computer terms.
2.2 Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
2.3 Identify basic word processing terms.
2.4 Key words and/or sentences using word processing.
3.2 Gather, organize and display data.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
The student will use Kidspiration or AppleWorks on the  computer to generate a Christmas list for Santa. Then go to  http://www.claus.com, click on "Naughty or Nice" and use "Instant Report" to find out if he/she is on Santa's Good List for this year. Privacy Information about this web site.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • Classroom computer, 

  • AppleWorks word processing software and/or

  • "Kidspiration" software, 

  • Internet access to http://www.claus.com

Pre Activities:

  1. We will do this activity in a small group setting.  

  2. Begin the lesson with a favorite Christmas story, poem or song about Santa.

  3. Before students go to the computer the teacher will:

    • Identify uses of technology at home and school. 

    • Identify physical components of a computer system. 

    • Identify the Internet as a source of information. 

    • Identify and discuss fundamental computer terms.

    • Identify basic word processing terms

Activities:

  1. Discuss what the children want for Christmas

  2. Demonstrate the use of "Kidspiration" and show students how to drag different picture items from the clip art gallery onto the page they have created and will print out  (or AppleWorks to generate their Christmas list).

Guided and Independent Practice:
Allow each child the opportunity to create a web of his/her Christmas list.   We will use pictures only, but you could label if you want to spend more time with the project. (If your students use AppleWorks, they will print their Christmas lists to take home).

Closure:
After all the lists are completed and printed, allow each child to visit Santa at http://www.claus.com.  The child will locate and use letters, and special keys on a keyboard to type in their name properly into they "Naughty or Nice" section and "Ask Santa".

Assessment: Each child will be observed to see if they can locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard to enter their names in the claus.com site and  generate a Christmas list.
