Fun With Graphs

Brief Description:
A fun graphing lesson in which the students read about making graphs,
learn how to make graphs using "The Graph Club" software, and
gather information and write about the graphs they have made.
Approximate time required:
30 minutes
Standard Course of Study Goals and
Objectives:
Math
4:01 Gather, organize and display information as a group activity.
4:02 Answer questions about charts and graphs.
4:04 Create concrete, pictorial, and symbolic graphs using prepared
grids.
Technology
1:1 Identify uses of technology at home and at school.
3.1 Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or
software.
3.2 Gather, organize and display data.
English Language Arts
4:04 Extend skills using oral and written language.
5:02 Applies phonics to write independently using temporary and/or
conventional spelling.
5:04 Uses complete sentences to write simple texts.
Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
The student will learn how to make a graph using *The Graph Club*
software. The student will gather information from the graph and write
independently about the results of the graph.
Materials/Resources Needed:
- "We Can Make Graphs" ( Book
from the Learn to Read/Read to Learn Math Series by Creative
Teaching Press)
- Classroom computers
- Presentation System
- "The Graph Club" software
- Pencil, crayons, and paper
Pre Activities: The students will
listen as the teacher reads "We Can Make Graphs. (This will spark
their interest and show the student how fun making graphs can be.)
Students brainstorm where and why graphs are used in everyday life.
Activities:
1. Demonstrate the use of "The Graph
Club" by making a class graph on "How We Get To School."
2. Show students how to create a new graph by dragging different pictures
from the clip art gallery to the new graph you are creating, "Our
Pets." Have students fill in a paper copy of the graph as the teacher
uses the presentation system to display the graph on the television.
Closure: Have students write about
the results of the graph "Our Pets."
Assessment: Allow each child the
opportunity to create a graph on the computer using "The Graph
Club" during their center/station time. Their graph will be displayed
on the bulletin board.
The following checklist is
an example of how a teacher may assess a student’s graph.
- Students choose and use the
appropriate clip art for their graph.
- Student is able to enter the correct
number into the chart.
- Student is able to correctly graph their data.
