Materials/Resources Needed:

  • "We Can Make Graphs" ( Book from the Learn to Read/Read to Learn Math Series by Creative Teaching Press)
  • Classroom computers
  • Presentation System
  • "The Graph Club" software
  • Pencil, crayons, and paper

Pre Activities: The students will listen as the teacher reads "We Can Make Graphs. (This will spark their interest and show the student how fun making graphs can be.)  Students brainstorm where and why graphs are used in everyday life.

Activities:

1. Demonstrate the use of "The Graph Club" by making a class graph on "How We Get To School."
2. Show students how to create a new graph by dragging different pictures from the clip art gallery to the new graph you are creating, "Our Pets." Have students fill in a paper copy of the graph as the teacher uses the presentation system to display the graph on the television.

Closure: Have students write about the results of the graph "Our Pets."

Assessment: Allow each child the opportunity to create a graph on the computer using "The Graph Club" during their center/station time. Their graph will be displayed on the bulletin board.

The following checklist is an example of how a teacher may assess a student’s graph.

  1. Students choose and use the appropriate clip art for their graph.
  2. Student is able to enter the correct number into the chart.
  3. Student is able to correctly graph their data.
