Brief Description:  Collections of artifacts from students' fifth grade year.

Approximate time required: All year

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives: 
English/Language Arts:
1.05 Read independently daily from self-selected materials (consistent with the student's independent reading level) to:

  • increase fluency. 
  • build background knowledge. 
  • expand and refine vocabulary. 
2.03 Read a variety of texts, such as: 
  • fiction (tall tales, myths). 
  • nonfiction (books of true experience, newspaper and magazine articles, schedules). 
  • poetry (narrative, lyric, and cinquains). 
  • drama (plays and skits).
2.05 Evaluate inferences, conclusions, and generalizations and provide evidence by referencing the text(s).
3.06 Conduct research (with assistance) from a variety of sources for assigned or self-selected projects (e.g., print and non print texts, artifacts, people, libraries, databases, computer networks).
4.03 Make oral and written presentations to inform or persuade selecting vocabulary for impact. 
4.05 Use a variety of preliminary strategies to plan and organize the writing and speaking task considering purpose, audience, and timeline.
4.07 Compose a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama using self-selected topic and format (e.g., poetry, research reports, news articles, letters to the editor, business letters).
4.10 Use technology as a tool to enhance and/or publish a product.
5.07 Edit final product for grammar, language conventions, and format.
5.08 Create readable documents through legible handwriting and word processing.
Technology
1.4 Describe the use of Acceptable Use Policy 
2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data.
2.4 Use a word processing application to create and format a document.
3.7 Evaluate information found via telecommunications for appropriateness, content, and usefulness.

Objectives:  The students will be able to collect various types of data from the school year and compose a word processing document.  They will be able to use the digital cameras to scan various products of work to be stored in the student folder.  They will also use the Internet for various pieces of work ie...research and clip art.

Materials/Resources Needed:

  1. ClarisWorks, 
  2. book binders with rings,
  3. construction paper, 
  4. computer
  5. printer
  6. Internet access, 
  7. scanner, 
  8. digital camera.
Pre Activities:
1.  Make sure you have Internet access permission slips from each student!  Describe the use of Acceptable Use Policy they are having their parents to sign.
2.  Train students on the use of the scanner, digital camera, and Internet use.

Activities:
1.  Students will collect various written works (be sure to cover all the above SCOS objectives for ELA above) throughout the year.
2.  Students word process their work and place them into their student folders.
2.  Scan  projects onto disk, and print their projects throughout the year to create a computer portfolio.
3. Take pictures throughout the year with the digital camera.

Closure: The last few weeks  of school , students will organize, print and  share their Memories book of fifth grade .

Assessment:
The class will create a rubric for assessing their Memories book of fifth grade.
