Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Science and Technology

Brief Description: Students will study the unit in Science on weather/climate. In class they will read the chapter on Climate, discuss, review vocabulary words, and do comprehension questions. Our spreadsheet will count as our science hands-on experiment. For the month of March and April on each Monday we take the temperature, humidity %, rainfall, wind speed, heat speed, and dew point.

Approximate time required: 30 minutes to record last finding for the month. Chart, computer, and printer/paper.

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives

Science
4.04 Compile weather data to establish climate trends.

Technology
2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.4 Select the most appropriate graph to display data and state reasons.

Math
1.05 Identify and compare rational numbers in decimals form (tenths and hundredths) using models and pictures.
4.03 Collect , organize, and display data from surveys, research, and classroom experiments, including data collected over time. Include data from other disciplines such as science, physical education, social studies, and the media.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: Students will study unit in Science Weather/ climate. We will discuss and review vocabulary, and do comprehension questions. They will collect temperature for the month of March /April. Information will plotted on spreadsheet and line graph.

Materials/Resources Needed:

Pre Activities:

  1. Teacher and students will study unit in Science weather/climate and have class discussion.
  2. Students will go to computer lab and design chart.
  3. Students will go to BMS weather web site to collect and record temperature info each Monday in the months of March/April.
  4. Students will take turns entering data on spreadsheet chart

Activities in Computer Lab:

  1. Students will locate and retrieve saved spreadsheet with the two months of data in lab from the school server.  Note: (file needs to be locked before attempting this activity with the class)
  2. Each student will enter the last Monday's data
  3. Then they will graph the information
  4. Students must choose the appropriate graph (line) and state their reasons for choosing the graph.
  5. Students use "Chart Options" to make sure the graph is labeled correctly.
  6. Students look at data and establish climate trends.

Closure: Students will print their spreadsheet and line graph on findings. They will be displayed in the hall.

Assessments:

  1. Technology skills will be graded by final spreadsheet/ line graph.
    • Data was entered correctly
    • Student created line graph
    • Graphs were labeled correctly
  2. Students will be assessed by vocabulary, comprehension questions, and assessment at the end of chapter in Science.
