Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: English Language Arts, Science, and Technology

Brief Description:   Students will study the unit in Science entitled “How Do Land and Air Effect the Climate”, discuss the unit, review the writing process, using paper and pencil, write the clarification paper, and then type the paper on the computer. The paper will be entitle “Its not the heat, its the humidity”.

Approximate time required:1 Prewriting class, typing the first draft on the class computer, 1 editing/revising class, and a 55 minute computer class to complete final draft. 

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives 
English Language Arts
2.07 Evaluate the usefulness and quality of information and ideas based on purpose, experiences, text, and graphics.
3.01 Respond to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama using interpretive, critical, and evaluative processes by: analyzing word choice and content. examining reasons for a character’s actions, taking into account the situation
and basic motivation of the character. creating and presenting a product that effectively demonstrates a personal. response to a selection or experience. Examining alternative perspectives.
4.08 Focus revision on target elements by:
. improving word choice
. rearranging text for clarity.
. create simple and /or complex sentences for clarity or impact.
. developing a lead, characters, or mood.
4.09 Produce work that follows the conventions of particular genres (e.g., clarification, essay, feature story, business letter).
4.10 Use technology as a tool to enhance and /or publish a product.
5.07 Edit final product for grammar, language, language conventions, and format.
5.08 Create readable documents through legible handwriting and word processing.
Science
4.03 Relate global atmospheric movement patterns to local weather.
4.05 Evaluate ocean’s effect on weather and climate.
Technology
2.3 Use keyboarding skills to improve speed and accuracy.
2.4 Use a word processing application to create and format a document.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
Students will study the unit in science “How Do Land and Air Effect the Climate”, discuss the unit relating it to our lives, go over vocabulary words, review writing process for clarification paper, brainstorm, write the paper, revise, and go to computer lab to type final draft.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • Science books
  • Computer/printer
  • AppleWorks word processing program
  • paper
  • pencil

Pre Activities: 

  1. Teacher with students will study unit entitle “How Do Land and Air Effect the Climate” and have class discussion. on this unit.

  2. Students will brainstorm and compare this lesson to our climate where we live.

  3. Students will also brainstorm about their activities on hot, humid days.

  4. We will review steps in writing a clarification paper.

Activities

  1. Classroom: Students will study Science unit “How Do Land and Air Effect Climate”.

  2. They will relate the issues to our climate as where we live.

  3. Students will go through the pre-writing process.  Their story maps and/or outlines must be complete before going to the lab. 

  4. Computer Lab: Students will type in the first draft of their clarification paper concerning top “Its not the Heat, Its the Humidity. Students double space the document.

  5. Students save and print their first draft.  (Teacher edits and conferences with students before returning papers.  This is done  before their next visit to the lab). 

  6. Students retrieve their documents, revise and edit papers .

  7. Then they will print their final paper.

Closure:  Students will read their clarification papers to the class.

Assessment:  

  1. Students will be assessed by discussing the unit, comprehension questions, and assessment at the end of the unit.

  2. Students’ clarification paper will be graded by 5th grade rubric scale with all the components that are required for writing. 

  3. Technology skills will be graded by observation and typing their paper on computer with revisions and printing of their paper.
