Veteran's Day Activities

Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Technology, Cooperation/Group Work and Interpersonal Skills

Brief Description: Students will be able to research websites to gather information about Veteran's Day in order to develop a quality school wide Veteran's Day Program and classroom group presentation

Approximate time required: 30 minutes web search and group planning, then a 5-10 minutes per group class presentation and school wide Veteran's Day Program

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives

School Counseling:
7.07  Demonstrate cooperative behavior in groups
7.08  Conclude that everyone has rights and responsibilities
7.12  Demonstrate how to communicate
7.13  Conclude that communication involves speaking, listening, and nonverbal behavior

Technology:
2.1  Use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data
2.3  Use keyboarding skills to improve speed and accuracy
2.6  Search and sort information using one criterion

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: Students will be able to use the internet to research Veteran's Day.  Students will be able to work in groups cooperatively.  Students will learn the history of Veteran's Day.  Students will develop and present a quality project in a school wide Veteran's Day Program as well as in their own classrooms.

Materials/Resources Needed:  

  • Computer Lab with one computer per person; 

  • Internet access to websites; 

  • paper and pencil; 

  • poster paper, 

  • construction paper, 

  • glue, 

  • scissors, 

  • markers and a

  •  printer for select groups

Pre-Activities: Each student will look at a Veteran's Day Program possibility by looking at http://www.vfw.org/amesm/prog.shtml

Activities: 

  1. Classroom/Homeroom teacher has divided students into groups.    

  2. Teacher will explain Computer Lab research. 

  3. Student will key in aforementioned website.

  4. One group member will draw from a hat a different website to research for  their group's project.  

  5. Web sites include: 

Closure: Groups will develop projects from their websites.

Assessment: Group will present their project to their classes for a Social Studies grade.  Selected activities will be presented by the students in a school wide Veteran's Day Program.
