Technology and Career Interests

Brief Description:  
Students will be able to identify areas of careers that coincide with their individual interests.

Approximate time required: 7 - 10 minutes per student

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:

School Counseling
003.04 Consider how school success and academic achievement enhance future career and vocational opportunities 004.04 Explore the importance of planning for a career

Technology
1.1 Recognize the influence of technology on life in the United States.
2.3 Use keyboarding skills to improve speed and accuracy
3.1 Create a product using information located in a database.
3.2 Gather, organize and display data

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will be able to identify career possibilities according to their interests and education as an adult. The student will take the Career Game interest inventory and receive information about possible careers. (The Inventory software is a database students use to key in their educational goal, gather information about themselves in order to create a product/inventory results to display for themselves and their parents).

Materials/Resources Needed:

  • Classroom computer,
  • Career Game Booklet for each student,
  • Counselor Tools software,
  • Printer and pencil

Pre-Activities:

  1. Each student will receive his or her own copy of "The Career Game Booklet" and a pencil. 
  2. Each student will complete each section of the booklet.

Activities
From their own Career Game Booklet, each student will type their individual results on the computer using the Counselor Tools software, including the following steps:

  1. With the Counselor Tools software opened, each student will open the "student" selection by clicking on it and then pressing "enter".
  2. The student will accurately enter their name using proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters.
  3. The student will accurately enter their education goal.
  4. The student will accurately enter their individual results in the Interest Scores boxes according to the results shown in the "Your Interests Suggests" section of the Career Game booklet.
  5. The student will then click on "find jobs".
  6. The Jobs Report will appear on the screen. Student will now click on print.
  7. The student clicks on finish. The previous screen will appear.
  8. The student will click on abort. This will return to the Counselor Tools main screen. The program is now ready for the next student's information.

Closure:  
The student is ready to read their printed results and discuss the influence of technology on finding jobs in the U.S.

Assessment
Each student will have an idea of a career path to take and the education required to pursue particular careers according to their own individual interests and education goals.
